About the course

School Direct with the Forge Trust leads to a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). The course prepares you to teach children in the 3 to 7 age range as a general primary teacher. The course is a very practical one with the majority of time spent in one of our academies. Each student will spend the majority of the autumn term in their “base” academy” initially observing high quality teaching, supporting groups and individuals before progressing to teaching the whole class.

In the spring term, students are given an alternative placement in a different academy in the trust. As a small trust we are able to involve potential students in the selection of placement academies to try to ensure we achieve a successful match for the candidate. For the final placement our students usually return to the base academy, to teach the class they started out with.

In the autumn and spring terms students spend four days in school and one day at university. In addition to this we offer a bespoke training programme, and release time for half a day per week for directed study. Our students routinely report that our training offer is a huge positive for our trust with a range of outstanding teachers delivering tailored teaching on the issues that really matter! A further benefit of School Direct with the Forge Trust is the programme of enrichment that we offer with opportunities to spend time in academies across the trust includeing pre-school units. We also have also previously been able to arrange enrichment in a special school we have links with. During the summer term students teach for 80% of the time and their time is entirely focused on their placement academy. Throughout the programme we offer sensitive support and development through our experienced mentors who have a thorough understanding of the challenges of Initial Teacher Training and a willingness to provide practical tips and advice.

School placements

The Forge Trust is a partnership of six schools in the East Midlands with schools in the Mansfield, Newark, Worksop and Gainsborough areas. As a student with the Forge Trust you will enjoy two main placements working with contrasting aged pupils in selected academies. In addition to the main placements we also offer enrichment placements in academies across the trust including pre-school units. We have also previously been able to arrange enrichment placements with a local special school and would willingly explore this again.

Placements are selected based on the interests and geographical location of candidates. We are aware that travel can impact on work life balance and will always seek to place students in academies that they can comfortably reach. A further factor will also be the capacity of the academy and in the event of over-subscription in one academy, we will always seek to offer a suitable alternative.

The Forge Trust specialises in the primay sector and can offer placements working within the age range of 3-11.

About the training provider

With seven academies situated across the East Midlands to choose from, we are able to tailor placements to the needs of students offering a choice not generally available through other routes. As well as having a track record for developing students and helping launch the careers of a number of outstanding professionals, many students have been successful in finding places with us after graduation. Some of whom have been identified as having leadership potential and have gone on to secure leadership roles within the trust.

As a trainee with Forge, you will be part of talented team that prides itself on teaching and learning. An evidence based approach has been honed over a number of years, initially at the founding school, in which a dramatic turn-around in pupil outcomes occurred. Mentors from across the trust will take you through approaches to teaching, in a step-by- step way to support your learning journey. Mentors work with our students to provide tailored support. At the same time a bank of experienced and specialist teachers from across the trust, provide school-based training on a range of themes from assessment and planning through to working with parents.

The Forge Trust is committed to promoting outstanding teaching across its academies and has clear systems and policies for planning, marking and feedback and approaches to teaching the core subjects and wider curriculum. Expectations are high but we believe trainees can benefit from proven strategies for raising attainment and the trust’s clarity of expectation.

Interview process

The interview includes a writing task, maths test and interview. Ahead of the interview you will be given the opportunity to research areas for an informal presentation and question and answer session. International students

We can sponsor Student visas, but this is not guaranteed.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Our trainees are important to both the trust as a whole and to each individual academy. We want our trainees to be successful and many are successful in finding places with us after graduation. At The Forge Trust we recognise that you may require additional assistance to engage fully with your studies due to a range of access needs.

Our academy buildings are all readily accessible and access plans are in place across our academies. If you have additional needs the trust ITT Lead will coordinate the trust and academy offer, where needed, to ensure that barriers to access at all stages of the process from recruitment to graduation are removed, overcome, mitigated or that suitable adaptive measures are put in place to support you.

In order to assess the level of support you may require, we use the legal definition of disability. If you are unsure whether you have access needs which are covered by disability legislation please contact The Forge Trust directly.
