About the course

School Direct with the Forge Trust leads to a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). The course prepares you to teach children in the 3 to 7 age range as a general primary teacher. The course is a very practical one with the majority of time spent in one of our academies. Each student will spend the majority of the autumn term in their “base” academy” initially observing high quality teaching, supporting groups and individuals before progressing to teaching the whole class.

In the spring term, students are given an alternative placement in a different academy in the trust. As a small trust we are able to involve potential students in the selection of placement academies to try to ensure we achieve a successful match for the candidate. For the final placement our students usually return to the base academy, to teach the class they started out with.

In the autumn and spring terms students spend four days in school and one day at university. In addition to this we offer a bespoke training programme, and release time for half a day per week for directed study. Our students routinely report that our training offer is a huge positive for our trust with a range of outstanding teachers delivering tailored teaching on the issues that really matter! A further benefit of School Direct with the Forge Trust is the programme of enrichment that we offer with opportunities to spend time in a contrasting setting including a local special school that we have links with. During the summer term students teach for 80% of the time and their time is entirely focused on their placement academy. Throughout the programme we offer sensitive support and development through our experienced mentors who have a thorough understanding of the challenges of Initial Teacher Training and a willingness to provide practical tips and advice.

School placements

The Forge Trust is a partnership of six schools in the East Midlands with schools in the Mansfield, Newark and Gainsborough areas. As a student with the Forge Trust you will enjoy two main placements working with contrasting aged pupils in selected academies. In addition to the main placements we also offer enrichment placements such as in pre-school, secondary school and special school, depending on the needs and interests of our students.

Placements are selected based on the interests and geographical location of candidates. We are aware that travel can impact on work life balance and will always seek to place students in academies that they can comfortably reach. A further factor will also be the capacity of the academy and in the event of over-subscription in one academy, we will always seek to offer a suitable alternative.

The Forge Trust specialises in the primay sector and can offer placements working within the age range of 3-11.

About the training provider

With six academies situated across the East Midlands to choose from, we are able to tailor placements to the needs of students offering a choice not generally available through other routes. As well as having a proven track record for developing students and helping launch the careers of a large number of outstanding professionals, many students have been successful in finding places with us after graduation. Some of whom have been identified as having leadership potential and have gone on to secure leadership roles within the trust.

As a trainee with Forge, you will be part of talented team that prides itself on teaching and learning. An evidence based approach has been honed over a number of years, initially at the founding school, in which a dramatic turn-around in pupil outcomes occurred. Experienced mentors across the trust will take you through approaches to teaching, in a step-by- step way to support your learning journey. Mentors work with our students to personalise the input they deliver, while at the same time a bank of outstanding teachers across the trust, provide school-based training on a range of themes from assessment and planning through to working with parents.

The Forge Trust also has a number of teachers undertaking studies at Masters’ Level, funded by the trust. This ensures professional expertise is at the heart of our work and also means that our teachers have an understanding of the challenges of being a student.

About the accredited body

Bishop Grosseteste University has been awarded the highest possible rating in the first ever Government-led Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment, a rating which was awarded to just the top 26% of universities in the UK. This shows that students receive the same high standard of education at BGU as they would at other leading universities such as Cambridge and Oxford.

The employability rates of their graduates are also consistently high. In 8 of the last 10 years they’ve been top nationally for employability and further study one year after graduation – no other university in the country can boast that!

Interview process

We believe in supporting candidates to choose the course and location that is right for them and so ahead of any interview, we offer candidates an informal tour of one of our academies with plenty of opportunity to get a feel for our trust and to ask questions.

The interview includes a writing task, maths test and interview, before which you will be given the opportunity to research areas for an informal presentation and question and answer session. Interviews are usually conducted by Carl Braithwaite and Jamie Macintyre who both work across the trust.

There is just one interview for this course and it will take place in one of our academies. We endeavour to inform all candidates of the outcome on the day of the interview. Our academies are all very accessible and we work flexibly to meet the needs of all applicants.

Training with disabilities and other needs

We really care about all of our trainees and aim to support them all of the way through their studies, from application to graduation. At The Forge Trust we recognise that you may require additional assistance to engage fully with your studies due to a range of access needs. Our Trust ITT lead plays a key role in coordinating support for any students with additional needs or other access requirements before and during their studies. In order to assess the level of support you may require, we use the legal definition of disability.

If you are unsure whether you have access needs which are covered by disability legislation please contact The Forge Trust directly.
