Our programme prepares our trainees to be excellent teachers to enable them to deliver high quality, purposeful and inclusive learning experiences, inspiring a love of learning and successful outcomes.
This is achieved through:
A school-based programme where trainees work alongside expert colleagues
Trainees develop their knowledge and understanding of teaching through a weekly professional studies day delivered at the regional training centre or through remote learning
All training is underpinned by current high-quality evidence and research
The General Professional Studies programme combines a pedagogical approach to learning with practical strategies for use in the classroom
Trainees will gain experience from practising teachers as well as specialist speakers in behaviour management, special educational needs and health and well-being
A two-week induction programme which provides every trainee with the knowledge and skill-base to prepare them for their placement schools, where they will observe expert colleagues in preparation for teaching
Dedicated mentor support throughout the programme with weekly observations and mentor meetings where targets are set to support a trainee’s development
Primary subject and curriculum knowledge support from expert practitioners
Experience and understanding of the key stages on either side of the training programme.
Course assignments are designed to help trainees demonstrate they have met the curriculum through planning, preparation and assessment of pupils. The programme is assessed through continual course work; there are no final exams.
Applicants apply for their preferred school where they will spend the majority of their training years.
Trainees are required to complete a second (B) placement as part of training.
The second placement (B) will be over 12 weeks in a contrasting key stage and setting. This enables us to ensure that we offer trainees a breadth of experience in their training years. Every effort is taken to place trainees in a school geographically convenient for them, without compromising their training needs.
This programme is part-time (over 2 years). For the first year, trainees spend two days a week in school and one day a week at the allocated training hub for primary (The Atkins Centre, Sidcup) or via online training sessions.
For the second year, trainees spend a minimum of two days a week in school. Some flexibility in the end date may be possible depending on the number of days a week spent training in year 2 and a trainee’s ability to meet the Teachers’ Standards.
An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.
We accept equivalences from the following organisations:
Birmingham City University (BCU) Equivalency testing
Please note that the candidate has to meet all costs for equivalency tests.
We are seeking well-qualified graduates who have a passion for learning and a commitment to helping children be the best that they can be.
Candidates will need to demonstrate a depth of understanding in their subject knowledge and have the ability and the willingness to develop curriculum and pedagogical knowledge appropriate to the age and phase of the pupils they will be teaching.
Candidates will need to demonstrate their intellectual and academic capabilities to prove that they can meet the requirements of the teaching role.
Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced clearance;
A minimum of two satisfactory references;
Recommended as medically fit to teach.
(TKAT SCITT will meet the cost of the Enhanced DBS, however, if an overseas check is necessary, the additional cost will be met by the trainee).

Fees and financial support
The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £13,870.
We offer two pathways leading to different qualifications. Fees for each pathway are as follows:-
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) only - £11,870 (spread across the 2 years)
QTS with accreditation for Post- Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Masters Credits - £13,870 (spread across the 2 years)
Both costs of these pathways are met by the trainee, although they may be eligible for a student loan via the Student Finance England (SFE).
Primary does not attract a government bursary.

We offer full-time and part-time bespoke training programmes: every training session is delivered by a highly skilled, experienced teacher. Our training is relevant and responsive to current developments in education and provides a hands-on approach to classroom practice.

TKAT SCITT was rated Good by Ofsted in our last inspection in March 2022.
We pride ourselves on the communication and support provided to trainees to enable them to successfully complete their training year.
We support trainees in finding a suitable Early Career Teacher (ECT) post.
Candidates take part in a selection and recruitment process designed to assess their suitability to train to teach.
The aim of the interview process is for candidates to demonstrate why they have chosen teaching as a career, demonstrate their subject knowledge and allow us to see their potential to work in in the classroom setting.
If successful, candidates will be made a conditional offer of a place on the TKAT SCITT programme, subject to all course requirements being met.
Candidates will be invited to attend an interview. This will either be held virtually online or face-to-face.
Candidates will be asked to plan a lesson which will be discussed during the interview and to prepare a short presentation based on the topic provided.
Candidates will also be given a maths (online timed diagnostic) and written task to complete.
Candidates may be asked to share a portfolio of work.

Training with disabilities and other needs
Our excellent communication with our ITT partner schools enable us to meet the needs of our trainees wherever possible. Individual support programmes are established at the start of the training programme to ensure trainees’ needs are met.
We believe pastoral support of our trainees is essential. SCITT staff are trained in mental health awareness and all trainees receive professional training to have coping strategies for their mental health and well-being throughout the training programme.
