PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
We work in partnership with Leeds Beckett University to ensure you have the correct balance of in-school experience and academic support required to achieve a PGCE and QTS. Your subject knowledge content will be delivered through training in our partner schools. You will have two placements in two contrasting schools across the alliance. The course runs from September to June.
School placements
The majority of our secondary schools are 11 - 16 with some 11 - 18. We also have links to a local 6th form college and often arrange full or partial placements there. Trainees are placed in the schools which have capacity to offer an experienced mentor and a range of suitable classes across key stages. We take note of candidates’ transport needs and, where possible, seek to place them in schools which are conveniently located based upon their individual circumstances. All trainees will have a minimum of two placement schools with a lead school which trainees return to in the summer term. We provide a Link Tutor as an additional point of contact from the partnership. Your Link Tutor will visit you during each placement and assess your progress along with your mentor.
In addition to two placement schools, all of our trainees will have the opportunity to experience a lower key stage in one of our primary schools.
Interview process
Your interview will take place at Castleford Academy or, in some instances, at one of our partner schools. You will be asked to plan a short teaching episode for a small group of Key Stage 3 students on a topic relating to your subject. You will also have formal interview which addresses wider educational issues. The whole process will take approximately two hours.
Fees
Financial support
You’ll get a bursary of £7,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.
You may be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.
Find out about financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
Requirements
Qualifications
Applicants should have at least a 2:2 honours degree relevant to secondary education in or related to the subject area applying for.
All applicants must have grade C passes (or equivalent) in GCSE English Language and Maths before making an application. Key Skills, Functional Skills and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy/Literacy are not accepted in place of GCSEs.
Evidence of recent experience in a UK Secondary school is helpful but not a requirement. Other experiences of working with children may be taken into consideration.
Personal qualities
We are looking for ambitious and committed individuals with a passion for their subject and a desire to share their enthusiasm and inspire young people. If you have these qualities, coupled with a relentless focus on securing the best outcomes for young people, we would encourage you to apply to train with us.
About the training provider
We work closely with the teams at Leeds Beckett University and the University of Huddersfield to offer primary and secondary training places across the Wakefield area. Both of the universities have successfully produced highly skilled teachers for many years. Together with their academic team and our partnership schools, we have successfully developed the Five Towns ITT Partnership. We offer placements with a large number of primary and secondary schools to ensure you gain practical school experiences and academic knowledge throughout the course to equip you with the most relevant and up to date skills for a career in teaching.
We are a small alliance so we know each of our trainees’ individual needs and can ensure placements accommodate any family commitments and additional needs.
We offer primary 5 - 11 in partnership with Leeds Beckett University a wide range of secondary courses 11-16 (with Leeds Beckett) and 11-18 ( with Huddersfield).
Training with disabilities and other needs
We ensure candidates with disabilities and other needs are aware of the support they can access through the universities so that they have the right support in place. We also look to place candidates in schools which are best suited to their specific needs.
