A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This course offers a non-salaried route into qualified teacher status. Secondary Mathematics, we will help you to transform your subject knowledge into teaching skills and educational theory into practice. You will then be qualified to deliver the National Curriculum and other related national strategies. Completion leads to both a postgraduate qualification and recommendation for qualified teacher status (QTS).

Working in conjunction with the University of Manchester (Ofsted rated Outstanding 2019) you will attend university-based sessions. These sessions will give you creative and innovative ideas to take into the classroom complimented by a blend of education theories, ideas and concepts.

You will spend approximately two-thirds of your time in schools and the rest will be University based.

We will support your development as a teacher by providing a quality teaching experience in our partner schools, where you will receive guidance and support from experienced mentors.

As an alliance, we work collaboratively with a range of secondary schools in our local area, which enables us to tailor placements to the individual.

Throughout your training year, there will be a bespoke training program that will be delivered by highly effective practitioners from within our alliance.

Peer lesson observations will enable you to participate actively in your own and your fellow students’ development as teachers, with the expectation that you will begin to develop your own teaching style, set targets, take your own initiatives and evaluate your own work in planning, teaching and assessing.

You should anticipate that time in university-based learning combined with school-based placements will roughly equate to the time commitment of a full-time job, with additional time required in evenings and weekends for background reading, lesson planning and completing written assignments.

Your school and University experiences are formally assessed. Both your mentors and tutors will help you to record your achievements and set targets.

During each placement, you will be formally observed teaching and helpful and constructive feedback will be given, and at the end of each school experience, you will receive a report from your mentor. The report will comment on the following areas:

teaching; planning; differentiation and assessment; learning environment; wider professional responsibilities. These reports, together with your record of achievement and development, facilitate your progression as a teacher.

The written assignments will allow you to gain a maximum of 60 master’s-level credits. Guidance and support to complete these assignments will be available from your University tutors.

Interview process

Following a successful application to UCAS, you will be invited to interview.

This process takes place during either a morning or an afternoon and we try to accommodate the needs of the applicant where possible.

Applicants should expect to partake in a teaching activity, followed by a short presentation to a small interview panel and who will then pose interview style questions.

The interview panel will consist of a subject specialist, an alliance mentor and a member of the administrative staff.

How school placements work

Candidates will be placed in two schools throughout the year.

We operate an A-B-A style training course. This approach ensures students experience different schools, allowing them to return to their initial placement school following their second placement. This style of placement facilitates self-reflection and pedagogical development.

Placement schools are selected based upon the needs of the trainees, the strengths of the differing departments across schools. We aim to provide a contrast of school type and approaches to learning.

As we work within the Pennine Teaching Alliance and our neighbouring schools, our placements are predominantly in the East Lancashire region.


The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,250

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £26,000
  • a bursary of £24,000

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Mathematics or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Minimum 2:2 honours degree in mathematics or some other subjects with a 50% mathematics component (such as some engineering or physics) Applicant who do not have a substantial amount (50% minimum) of mathematics in their degree may be eligible for a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course provided they have either an A level in mathematics at grade B or above. Minimum grade C or 4 at GCSE (or equivalent) in English language and mathematics.

About the training provider

The Pennine Teaching Alliance is an expanding alliance situated on the border of Lancashire and Yorkshire. We are an alliance of 9 schools (1 high school and 8 primary schools) with extremely close working partnerships with secondary schools within our area. We work alongside The University of Manchester to offer our students personalised training that will equip them with the skills necessary to become an outstanding teacher. The schools within our alliance have a strong track record of successfully leading teacher training and have a robust, quality assured, bespoke program for students. Feedback from students and their HEI providers has always been overwhelmingly positive with specific reference to the support provided. Our aim is to provide our students with the opportunities to allow the children within our local area to succeed from receiving an exceptional quality of education. About the accredited body

We work closely with the University of Manchester, who’s PGCEs are rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted (Ofsted Report, 2019) and have been highlighted as the best university provider of initial teacher training in the North of England (Good Teacher Training Guide 2017). Together we seamlessly integrate their excellent training with our bespoke package.
