The course is full time and runs from September until the beginning of July.
All trainees must demonstrate that they can fully meet each of the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the course. Trainees will be continually assessed through lesson observations and placement reports whilst on teaching placements, and through a series of 3 short assignments. Detailed portfolios of evidence are submitted 3 times during the year to demonstrate how trainees are meeting the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Following the first 2 submissions, trainees receive feedback on their progress.
The PGCE is accredited by University of Northumbria and assessed through written assignments.
If a trainee does not meet the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status, but has passed the 2 PGCE modules, the credits can still be used towards a MA programme.
The course is made up of General Professional Studies sessions, the Subject Specialism Programme and PGCE modules. It will also involve 3 teaching placements; the first runs from September until December. The second placement (in a different school) runs from January until March. For Placement 3 you return to your host school from April until July.
Placement 2 schools are selected to provide you with a different experience from that of your host school.
An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in biology or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.
About the training provider
Acklam Grange School, in association with Durham SCITT, is a large, 11-16 urban, multi-cultural secondary school with first class facilities in campus-style buildings all on one site. We offer all our teachers, support staff and trainees a nationally acclaimed professional development programme (AGS Inspire), together with a nationally recognised staff well-being package supported by a serving NHS practitioner. Our school results since 2016 have seen us as one of the top performing schools in the country.
Trainees will undertake 2 placements, 1 diagnostic and an extended placement at Acklam Grange School. You will be allocated a mentor in both schools as well as being assigned a Subject Specialist by Durham SCITT. The training will offer relevant, practical, up-to-date guidance for the classroom, whilst encouraging trainees to become reflective practitioners committed to improving teaching and learning in schools. Trainees who successfully complete the course will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). As an integral part of the course, there is an opportunity to study 2 Masters’ level modules which lead to a PGCE and can be used as credits towards an MA.
The majority of your time will be spent at Acklam Grange School where there will be a comprehensive training programme, supplemented by training at Durham SCITT. Other features of the course will include; an enhancement course with the opportunity to visit an SEN school as well as a school for autistic students. Subject knowledge training will be delivered through Durham SCITT’s SSP programme.
The first thing we look at is your application form and your references to decide whether or not we should invite you for interview. It is, therefore, important to include all the relevant information on the form to help us make this decision.
If you are invited to interview and have a disability, please let the Course Administrator know in advance if there are any special arrangements that should be made for the interview process, for example large print copies of documentation, additional time for reading or wheelchair access to the interview rooms.
You will be sent information about a 15 minute subject specific teaching task. The activity should be devised to be appropriate for a group of Year 10 (14 - 15) students. The interview panel will then ask you several questions to establish your motivation for wanting to teach in your chosen subject area and some administration questions. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the course. After the teaching task and formal interview, you will have a timed written and numeracy activity to complete.
The formal interview panel will be made up of a subject specialist and a Senior Leader.
