During your course you will gain the benefits of assimilating early on into schools within our MAT, as well as gaining tuition and expertise from Leeds Trinity University which has an excellent track record in Initial Teacher Education.
Stage A - September - December.
4 days per week in “school based” learning
1 day per week “university based” learning – Subject knowledge and Applied Pedagogy.
Your time in school will initially include some orientation tasks, observing lessons and getting to know the Geography department. You will experience students being taught the relevance of Geography to everyday life through a wide variety of topics that challenge their perspectives of what the world is like and why.
Your classroom practice will begin with team teaching alongside your mentor or other host teachers, as your confidence grows this will lead to teaching some lessons independently.
You will receive weekly Professional Education Studies (PES) tuition led by senior members of our staff. PES sessions are designed to give insights and strategies to tackle issues that you will face in your training placements, when applying for your first job and in the first years of the profession.
Stage B - January- June
4 days per week in “school based” learning
1 day per week “university based” learning
5 days per week in “school based” learning
occasional “university based” learning days.
In Stage B you will start a second placement in a different school. You will appreciate the benefit of our course as the behaviour policy will be the same as your previous school allowing you to focus on developing your classroom practice and understanding of how students learn. You will be supported by your mentor and other members of the Geography department to take on more responsibility for planning, teaching and evaluating your impact of a wider range of classes, building up to 50% of an ECTs timetable (approx. 12 lessons) by Easter. Once again you will be treated as a member of the Geography team, you will be included in whole school CPD and encouraged to get involved in Geography department meetings, Parents meetings and school visits. PES sessions will also continue during Stage B.
You will qualify with a PGCE and be ready for a successful career in teaching.
We aim to offer you a range of experiences and you will complete placements in at least 2 of our academies. You will mostly be teaching in the 11-16 age range, but there are also opportunities for gaining sixth form experience.
For the first two terms you will usually spend 4 days per week in school and one at University. In the third term as your confidence in the class room develops you will spend 5 days in school.
You will be well supported throughout the course by well-trained subject mentors in school and university. Each of our academies also has an ITT coordinator who will support you, your mentor and liaise with your university mentor and tutors,
All our schools are easily accessible by public transport and from the M62 corridor. We place trainees based on the availability of quality mentors within a school, but will also take into consideration any special requests.
An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in geography or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.
If you do not already have the appropriate GCSEs, or if you are unable to provide proof of your grades, we can accept GCSE equivalency tests taken with www.equivalencytesting.com, www.astarequivalency.co.uk or Birmingham City University (BCU) www.bcu.ac.uk. You only need to do the test if you are offered a place with us that you firmly accept. The interview panel will comprise of the Rodillian MAT Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Lead and a subject expert. A tutor from Leeds Trinity University may also be in attendance.
The day will comprise of:
A welcome talk.
A tour of the Academy given by students - this gives you the opportunity to see the school in action and talk to our students.
You will be asked to prepare in advance a short teaching task which you will discuss with the interview panel.
A formal interview.
