Our Secondary Programme offers high quality training, leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), including credits at Master’s level.
The course is 37 weeks long and combines practical teaching with professional training. It has been designed to give Trainee Teachers the necessary learning opportunities and support to enable them to demonstrate they have developed the knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the Teachers’ Standards for QTS. There are built-in assessment structures which help Trainees track their progression throughout the Colchester Teacher Training Consortium CTTC curriculum. This curriculum is centred around 4 key values: CREATIVITY, TARGETED INTERVENTION, THINKING CRITICALLY AND COLLABORATION and ensures trainees have full access to their entitlement under the Initial Teacher Training Core Content Framework.
The training consists of placements within two contrasting schools across the secondary age phase, along with centre-based training and engagement with evidence based academic research. There is also the opportunity to gain experience within specialist SEND (Special Education Needs & Disabilities) provision, Sixth form and Pupil Referral Unit settings. Additionally, trainees will have a lead mentor for subject studies to develop their chosen discipline.
We have a high number of schools within our Consortium across North Essex and South Suffolk who offer diverse placements to our trainees. All schools provide excellent support and have been highly rated by ex-trainees as preparing them well for a career in teaching.

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in business studies or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

We recognise that applicants will bring with them other relevant experience such as working with people and applying their subject knowledge to a range of context.
Offers of a training place are subject to safer recruitment procedures including pre-course screening checks. Safeguarding references will be sought and all applicants will be required to undertake an Enhanced DBS check. In addition, on-line searches will be carried out and overseas police checks will be sought for anyone who has spent more than three months outside of the UK.

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,200.

Established in 2003, CTTC is an outstanding provider in all areas (Ofsted Nov 2017), offering a School-Centred Initial Teacher Training Programme. Our strong partnership of over 65 schools and colleges across Essex and South Suffolk provides diversity and choice for trainees. The training hubs are located in Colchester, Southend and Ipswich to serve the local schools. Our schools offer a wide range of educational experiences including grammar school, sixth form colleges and specialist SEND placements.
Our programmes are run in collaboration with our partner schools and were judged outstanding across all areas by Ofsted. In 2022, 100% of trainees commended the quality of CTTC’s curriculum and programme.
Our Primary and Secondary School Direct programmes offer high quality training and support, leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), including 60 Master’s level credits.
Local schools are keen to employ trainees from the partnership and many ECT and former trainees move quickly into leadership and management roles.

We invite short-listed applicants to participate in an interview process involving the following:
Planning and presenting a lesson to the interview panel
Applicants will be welcomed by our friendly team and the interview panel will consist of a Consortium Director and another leading member from our training team.
Applicants will be asked to complete a short English and Maths task which includes composing a letter. This gives the opportunity for applicants to demonstrate how they can communicate in writing, accurately and effectively.
The interview itself will last for approximately 30 minutes and includes a 10 minute presentation on the lesson, discussing the reasoning behind the lesson design.
Questions will be framed around the applicant’s previous relevant experience, skills, knowledge of the curriculum and aptitude for becoming a teacher of the future. The process will also ensure that potential candidates are safe and appropriate to work with children and ensure their commitment to celebrating economic, social and cultural diversity.
