A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Our Secondary Programme offers high quality training, leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), including credits at Masters level, validated by the University of Greenwich.

The course is 37 weeks long and combines practical teaching with professional training. It has been designed to give Trainee Teachers the necessary learning opportunities and support to enable them to demonstrate they have developed the knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the Teachers’ Standards for QTS. There are built-in assessment structures which help Trainees track their progression throughout the Colchester Teacher Training Consortium CTTC curriculum. This curriculum is centred around 4 key values: CREATIVITY, TARGETED INTERVENTION, THINKING CRITICALLY AND COLLABORATION and ensures trainees have full access to their entitlement under the Initial Teacher Training Core Content Framework.

The training consists of placements within two contrasting schools across the secondary age phase, along with centre-based training and engagement with evidence based academic research. There is also the opportunity to gain experience within SEND, EAL, Sixth form and Pupil Referral Unit settings. Additionally, trainees will have a lead mentor for subject studies to develop their chosen discipline.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in Physical education or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

It is essential for applicants to have excellent personal attributes, which will enable them to relate to young people and communicate effectively. Ideally, an understanding of what makes effective teaching and learning in the primary phase will also be of benefit.

Qualities sought include:

  • Commitment to the safeguarding of young people
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to continuing professional development
  • A willingness to train, listen to advice and learn from mistakes
  • Ability to cope with difficult and challenging situations
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Well organised and hardworking
  • Sense of humour

Other requirements

We recognise that applicants will bring with them into teaching other relevant experience which falls broadly into three categories:

  • Experience of working with young people e.g. both paid and voluntary work
  • Experience of applying subject knowledge e.g. employment in your specialist field.
  • Experience of working with people e.g. managing people in the work place, voluntary work with adults.

Offers of a training place are subject to safer recruitment procedures including pre-course screening checks where safeguarding references will be sought and all applicants will be required to undertake an Enhanced DBS check.

Salary

For the period of training all applicants must be employed as an unqualified teacher at a school, and (except applicants employed in academies or independent schools) must be paid in accordance with at least the minimum of the unqualified teacher pay range for the period of their training.

There will be a fee payable either by the trainee or school (to be agreed independently of CTTC) for the PGCE from the University of Greenwich.

About the training provider

Established in 2003, CTTC is an outstanding provider in all areas (Ofsted Nov 2017), offering a School-Centred Initial Teacher Training Programme. Our strong partnership of over 60 schools and colleges across North Essex and South Suffolk provides diversity and choice for trainees. The training hubs are located in both Colchester and Ipswich to serve the local schools. Our schools offer a wide range of educational experiences including grammar school, sixth form colleges and specialist SEND placements.

Our programmes are run in collaboration with our partner schools and were judged outstanding across all areas by Ofsted. In 2021, 100% of trainees commended the quality of CTTC’s curriculum and programme.

Our Primary and Secondary School Direct programmes offer high quality training and support, leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), including 60 Masters level credits validated by the University of Greenwich.

Local schools are keen to employ trainees from the partnership and many ECT and former trainees move quickly into leadership and management roles.

Interview process

We invite short-listed applicants to participate in a selection process involving the following:

  • Teaching a Lesson
  • English (spelling and grammar) task
  • Maths (data) task
  • Interview

We ask all interviewees to teach a micro lesson to a group of pupils.

Applicants will then be asked to complete a spelling and grammar task, and a data task, which offers the opportunity to provide a written analysis of the task. This also gives the opportunity for applicants to demonstrate they can communicate in writing, accurately and effectively.

The interview will last for approximately 25 minutes and includes a 10 minute presentation on the lesson discussing the reasoning behind the candidates lesson design. Questions will be framed around the applicant’s previous relevant experience, skills, knowledge of the curriculum and aptitude for becoming a teacher of the future. The process will also ensure that potential candidates are safe and appropriate to work with children and ensure their commitment to celebrating economic, social and cultural diversity.

Applicants will also be invited to attend an interview with the Employing School.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Trainees value the strong pastoral support and mentoring that they receive on the programme. Support for trainees’ health and wellbeing is embedded across the programme.

Bespoke support is provided for trainees with a variety of needs. Examples include:

  • Personal tutor for the PGCE
  • Resources to allow easier access on computer applications if required
  • Expert pastoral care
  • All school placements allow for trainees with access requirements
