PGCE with QTS

A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

This course allows you to meet the demands of Secondary education. You’ll gain a thorough understanding of teaching pedagogy and your subject specialism, as well as spend 120 days in local schools to cement your knowledge.

On this course, you’ll spend 120 days in local and regional partner schools, applying the skills that you have learned on Hallam’s City Campus. You’ll study Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculum and teaching methods, so you’re ready to work in any Secondary oschool - over 96 per cent of our PGCE graduates are teaching or in further study within six months of graduating. Completing the PGCE course gives you 60 credits towards a masters, giving you a chance to study and specialise further.

School placements

School-based training is an integral part of the course, and you will work with pupils in key stages 3 and 4 and also have Post-16 experience.

We offer the course in partnership with local and regional Secondary schools, which play a key role in the teaching and assessment of your professional competence against the teachers’ standards.

In total you spend 120 days in school over the year.

You will be assigned a school-based mentor for your placement.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

We are looking for the next generation of outstanding teachers and future school leaders. They will be passionate about children and education but also care about our schools and the communities they serve and the special ethos each of those schools have.

They will have experience of working with young people - ideally some of this will be school based giving them a good awareness of how schools operate and teachers work. Whatever their experience our applicants need to demonstrate how they have engaged, communicated with and inspired the young people they have worked with.

Other requirements

You will need to pass an Enhanced Criminal Record Check. Ideally you will have some experience working with children in a school or another organisation e.g. nursery, playgroups, scouts etc. As we are not allowed to hold a licence to sponsor visa applications you will need to be a UK citizen. Citizen’s of the European Economic Area or Switzerland will need to check their residency status at the time of application. You will be asked to provide official confirmation of your residency status on application

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,250

There are Student Loans available to pay the fees.

If you decide to pay privately then the payment schedule is

Term 1 : £2,625 Term 2 : £2,625 Term 3 : £4,000 With each amount being due on the first day of each term.

You will have to pay the cost of the Enhanced Criminal Record Check in advance of starting the course.

About the training provider

As a training provider we offer our trainees a diverse range of outstanding opportunities to help them become the best teacher they can be.

Our programme firmly believes that educators of pupils (SEND/Primary) should be highly skilled and adaptable to be able to provide an educational experience to all their pupils that makes a difference.

All trainees will have placements in both SEND and Primary. This is to ensure you are an all round practitioner who can enable learning in an ever increasingly changing classroom environment.

For those trainees who successfully complete our course, employment opportunities are available in both the SEND/Primary sectors.

All trainees are placed within outstanding schools with outstanding mentors. This ensures that all trainees are supported to reach their potential whilst being exposed to highly effective and innovative practice.

We place a large emphasis on trainee development and invest additional time to allow all trainees to access CPLD opportunities that improves awareness of educational theories and pedagogies which can be utilised in both the SEND and Primary sectors.

Our aim is to ensure all pupils receive the best education possible by enabling you to become the best teacher you can be.

Interview process

If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to a selection event, and you should bring a passport or photo driving license with you. You can bring other forms of photo ID for the selection event, but if you do, you will still need to present valid identity documents required by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) at your pre-course day.

The selection event is a process which assesses if you’re suitable for a place on the course. It’s a chance to show us your knowledge about the subject and your enthusiasm for the career. Being invited to a selection event doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a place on the course - the point of the day is to help us come to a mutual decision. We need to decide whether to make you an offer and you need to decide whether you like the course and the university.

We aim to make the interview process as rigorous and informative as possible. It’s very much a two-way process, where you can evaluate what we offer while we find out more about you. In order to help us explore your thinking and subject knowledge, and for you to decide if this is the right course for you, we have a number of activities we usually use as part of the interview process.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

If you have a disability, including long term medical conditions, specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and A(D)HD) and mental health conditions, you can access additional support for your academic studies whilst at Sheffield Hallam.

Students can receive support for a wide variety of conditions. There is extensive support available, including

  • Learning contracts- reasonable adjustments to your course such as extensions or extra time in exams
  • Support workers - like a mentor to help with organisation, or a personal assistant to help with mobility
  • Equipment/Assistive Technology and software - such as digital recorders or text to speech software

We have an on-site assessment Centre, the Sheffield Regional Assessment Centre, where a range of disability specialists can carry out Study Needs Assessments.
