Mathematics teachers are in great demand and this course enables you to meet the national standards for the award of qualified teacher status. Combining theory and practice, you will comprehensively investigate the structure of the mathematics curriculum, considering numbers and algebra, shape, space and measures, and handling data. You will be encouraged to provide evidence of your own development in teaching and learning.
Under the guidance of our team of experts, students become involved in designing, producing, teaching and evaluating a range of materials currently used to support Mathematics in the secondary school.
As a school-led route the great majority of your time will be spent in your training school, and the content and focus of many aspects of the training programme will be targeted to meet your individual needs, by utilising the resources of the school and their alliance partners. In addition, at Middlesex you will also benefit from access to the University’s extensive resources, including those provided by the library and student support services.
The Middlesex School Direct programme provides you with a series of subject enhancement sessions, and a programme of professional studies which will be run at the University. These may include sessions which:
Allow you to visit a variety of partnership schools and non-formal educational sites to enhance learning in specialist areas.
Provide you with opportunities to enhance your knowledge and pedagogy of your subject, or specialist areas of the curriculum.
Develop your understanding of key contemporary issues within education, such as those around inclusion or EAL and SEND provision in schools.
School Direct Salaried trainees will have timetabled lessons where they will be teaching independently from the start of term.
The course is full time over 38 weeks (term time only). Trainees will receive an immersive training programme where they are working alongside outstanding teachers with current and relevant experience.
Trainees will be placed in one school for the entire academic year with a 6 week second placement at a contrasting partner school arranged by the SLA.
All partner schools have experienced subject mentors and professional tutors who are committed to high expectations .
Trainees will be awarded Secondary QTS (11-16) however, all partner schools ensure trainees have the opportunity to teach A-Level classes in preparation for their ECT year.
Professional studies training sessions will be held at Middlesex University (Scheduled dates will be provided prior to the commencement of the programme). During all other times trainees will be at their base school .

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.
Salaried School Direct trainees are paid on at least point one of the unqualified teachers’ scale.

About the training provider
Southgate Learning Alliance (formerly known as ETSA Southgate) is a partnership of schools working with Middlesex University and The Compton SCITT to provide high-quality teacher training. There are lots of ways to get into teaching, but at Southgate Learning Alliance, we offer a School Direct route with Southgate School as the lead school. Our vision is to train and develop the next generation of outstanding teachers for our schools.
We recruit with our partner schools, who are all highly experienced in training teachers.
You will need to attend an interview, which should take place within the school you will be training to teach.
At the interview stage, your suitability for teaching will be assessed including your subject knowledge for teaching and competency in the fundamental skills of English and Maths. If any shortfall is identified, you may be required to complete some additional work to secure the appropriate level of competency before being accepted on the programme.
During the programme, your competency in these areas will be assessed and developed to ensure you reach the required level.
You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.
Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
