A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Throughout your time on a Secondary English School Direct PGCE you will have time in University to learn basic teaching skills and subject knowledge. The lead school will host professional sessions to cover areas such as teaching and learning, safeguarding, lesson planning, behaviour management, pupil progress and assessment, dealing with parents, differentiation and well being. These will be delivered by senior staff from Oakwood or Specialist Leaders within our alliance. First placement starts in Sept and last around 12 weeks up until Christmas. 2nd placement begins early January and ends end the beginning of April (10 weeks). 3rd and final placement starts the end of April and ends mid June (6 weeks). You will be assessed continuously via lesson observations on a weekly basis and formal feedback will be given. You will also complete 3 assignments throughout the year. This course is unique and we welcome candidates to apply if you would like experience of both mainstream and special needs. This gives you more skills to be able to teach in either setting.

School placements

Though out your School Direct PGCE you will have 3 main placements (each between 8 - 12 weeks in length) along with 2/3 days school based experience placement. Your school placement would be selected in consultation with the trainee looking at travel distance from home. All our partner Secondary schools are located locally to Oakwood. Ellesmere Park high School, Eccles. St Patrick’s R.C High School, Eccles. Great Sankey High School, Warrington. Green Lane Special School, Warrington. Oakwood Academy Special School, Eccles. You will have the opportunity to teach from Year 7 - Year 11 in both mainstream and special schools. This opportunity is adding more skills for you to take into your first teaching post.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,000.

About the training provider

Oakwood Academy is an Outstanding special school for pupils aged 9 - 19 years who have a range of moderate and/or complex learning difficulties. The school has Visual Arts, Technology and Sport Specialist status. We became a Teaching School in 2016 and have grown our ITT allocations since this time. The alliance has capacity to provide both primary and subject specific secondary places. Within the primary school alliance, the following schools will have capacity to support trainees in their placements. We have a long history of working in partnership with a wide range of schools. We have developed partnerships across authorities. We also work in close collaboration with Universities, especially MMU.

Interview process

If you are successful in being shortlisted for interview you will be contacted via email by the lead school (Oakwood Academy).

The interview consists of the following tasks: Lesson activity 15-20 mins Interview 30 mins written task 25/30 mins

You will be notified on the day if you have been successful or not and feedback will be given.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
