About the course

The University works in close partnership with a wide range of schools, academies and teaching school alliances.

You complete most of your school experience in one host School Direct establishment with a further 30 days in another school to ensure that you gain experience of different teaching environments. Academic theory will be delivered at the University campus.

This course is designed to prepare you for teaching children in the 5 to 11 age range.

With a balance of school and university-based learning, you’ll graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

You’ll be given a foundation in the full range of subjects that make up the primary school curriculum, with particular emphasis on the core subjects – English, Mathematics and Science.

School placements

You will spend the majority of time in your main placement school but will also be required to carry out a 2nd placement at another school which is usually for a period of 6 weeks.

Your 2nd placement will provide you with an excellent opportunity to compare and contrast different approaches to all aspects of teaching.

About the training provider

Academies Enterprise Trust is one of the largest networks of schools in England with 57 schools in virtually every region of the country.

We believe that the achievement gap across our system is a provision gap and every child has an entitlement to an excellent education in every classroom, every day. We understand that getting it right in every classroom every day is hard, but it’s also the single most important thing that we do.

Our people are our single greatest resource and we want to make sure we are creating the optimum environment and conditions so that everyone in AET can do their very best work. We will only deliver on our promise of excellence for all of our children if we attract, develop and retain the very best talent in the country and surround them with exceptional development throughout their careers.

We want people on our team who are excited by scale and the prospect of having a deep and lasting impact on the lives of thousands of children. We also want people who are intellectually rigorous, stay curious, and generous enough to be committed to the messy challenge of collaboration.

In joining the Trust in your training year you will have the opportunity to make a transformational impact in the communities you work.

Whatever your area of expertise,if you have the right skills and outlook, AET is an excellent place to develop your career.

To make your next move a career-defining opportunity, choose to train with us.

Interview process

Candidates whose application form shows that they meet our short-listing criteria will be invited to an Interview Day.

The selection process will usually involve:

  • A classroom-based task
  • Time with staff/departments
  • A formal interview
  • A written task

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
