PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to
teach in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s also recognised internationally.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.
- Course length
- Up to 2 years
- Date you can apply from
- 14 October 2019
- Date course starts
- September 2020
About the course
Based in and employed by a secondary school, apprentices will spend much of their time in class, teaching their specialist subject to the 11-16 age range and working with other teachers. They will draw on eQualitas’ distance learning resources for independent study, and attend some training days in central London.
Apprentices have a visiting tutor from eQualitas, who spends a day in school each half term to observe them teaching, provide some training, review their developing evidence and assess their progress so that helpful targets are set for the apprentice’s next steps. Assessment for QTS takes place towards the end of the training programme and QTS is awarded (if the Teachers’ Standards are met).
After 12 months, the apprentice has to pass the end-point assessment which checks whether he or she is maintaining and further developing what was attained in the QTS assessment.
Candidates whose application form shows that they meet our short-listing criteria will be invited to an Interview Day.
The selection process will usually involve:
- A classroom-based task
- Time with staff/departments
- A formal interview
- A written task
We recommend that you aim to gain some experience in a classroom prior to interview.
How school placements work
You will spend the majority of time in your main placement school but will also be required to carry out a 2nd placement at another school or education setting which is usually for a period of 6 weeks.
Your 2nd placement will provide you with an excellent opportunity to compare and contrast different approaches to all aspects of teaching.
Your first year will be on an unqualified teacher salary as agreed with your placement school who will be employing you. Your second year when you’re an NQT (newly qualified teacher), you will be paid as an NQT.
The funding for the apprenticeship training is paid for by the employing school so this is not a cost for the trainee teacher.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You’ll need to hold a degree awarded by a UK higher education provider, or a recognised equivalent qualification, ideally with at least 50% within your teachable subject.
You’ll need to have achieved a standard equivalent to grade C/4, or above, in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics.
We are committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and expect all staff, trainees and volunteers to share this commitment. A Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate will be required for this placement. This placement will be subject to enhanced checks as part of our Prevent Duty.
