PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
School Direct (Tuition Fee) is a school-led route into teaching at both primary and secondary stages. On this route you will join other student teachers on one of the PGCE programmes at the University of Portsmouth while undertaking your teaching experience in a participating school. The UCAS application will go to the relevant school.
School placements
You will spend the majority of time in your main placement school but will also be required to carry out a 2nd placement at another school which is usually for a period of 6 weeks.
Your 2nd placement will provide you with an excellent opportunity to compare and contrast different approaches to all aspects of teaching.
Interview process
Candidates whose application form shows that they meet our short-listing criteria will be invited to an Interview Day.
The selection process will usually involve:
- A classroom-based task
- Time with staff/departments
- A formal interview
- A written task
We recommend that you aim to gain some experience in a classroom prior to interview.
Fees
Financial support
You’ll get a bursary of £10,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.
You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.
You may be eligible for a loan while you study – note that you’ll have to apply for undergraduate student finance.
Find out about financial support if you’re from outside the UK.
Financial support from the training provider
Eligible UK and EU students can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fees from the government which you repay gradually through small monthly repayments.
