A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Please note you will only be eligible to apply for this course if you have a school who is willing and able issue you a contract of employment as an unqualified teacher for the duration of the course.

On successful completion of the course students are awarded QTS, PGCE, comprising 60 credits at Master Level 6.

Students are placed in two highly performing schools, mentored by good and outstanding teachers.

They will experience all aspects of school life which is invaluable when applying for future teaching positions.

Students will spend more than 120 days in schools on placement.

We arrange for students to visit EYFS provision to increase their awareness of where children transition into Key Stage 1 from, we will also arrange for students to visit a secondary school to increase their awareness of where children transition on to from Key Stage 2.

Students will also have the opportunity to view best practice for SEN and EAL children.

School placements

Students will be placed in two primary schools within the Barnsley borough, schools placement schools will be selected based on the strength of their provision.

Wherever possible will be place students in placement schools that are located conveniently for their needs, especially if the student has caring responsibilities. Students will not be expected to travel further than 25 miles from their home address to their placement school.

Students will be asked their preferred key stage (KS1 or KS2) and will spend the vast majority of the their placement within this key stage.

Students will spend from September to December in their alternative placement school before spending from January through to June in their preferred key stage. This 6 month block allows students to develop a sense of ownership of their class and develop relationships with children, parents and the staff team.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

About the training provider

We provide professional personalised Initial Teacher Training. It is our aim to train the next generation of outstanding teachers in South Yorkshire!

We work in partnership with Sheffield Hallam to deliver the Schools Direct route into teaching (3-7, 5-11 & 11-16 age ranges). On successful completion of the course students are awarded QTS, PGCE, comprising 60 credits at Master Level 6.

Students are placed in two highly performing schools (for Primary both will be within Barnsley ), mentored by good and outstanding teachers, experiencing all aspects of school life which is invaluable when applying for future teaching positions.

We pride ourselves on our holistic support for students. Creating opportunities for sharing good practice ideas and we foster a supportive environment amongst our cohorts.

Our experts deliver taught training sessions to ensure our students are fully equipped to enter the teaching profession. These cover topics that are most relevant to the current climate and needs of the local region.

We work with small cohorts and so our training is tailored to meet the needs of individual students.

Over the last three years we have had a 100% pass rate. In 2020/21 35% of students were awarded QTS with Higher Standard & over 75% of students had secured an ECT position before the end of the course.

Interview process

We invite applicants who successfully meet the application criteria to attend a Selection Event at one of our schools.

The event will be led by staff from our partnership schools along with a staff member from Tykes Teaching Alliance. The event will last approximately two to three hours and will include:

A meet & greet – an introductory talk about the course and Tykes Teaching School Alliance A learning walk – where you will be shown around school by a group of pupils An individual interview A teaching task

At this stage we assess your;

  • ability to communicate clearly, both orally and on paper
  • knowledge of the area of education you are interested in
  • interest in, and commitment to, a career in teaching
  • ability to work effectively with children in an educational setting (for primary education courses you will need to bring the reference from the educational setting you attended)

Please note that during the Covid-19 pandemic we are conducting Selection Events remotely via Zoom.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

At Tykes Teaching Alliance we aim to provide a bespoke, personalised, professional package for all our students. We discuss with our students their specific needs and tailor our support and training offer where needed.

We are friendly, approachable and always on hand for our students.

If you have a disability, including long term medical conditions, specific learning difficulties and mental health conditions you can access additional support for your academic studies whilst at Sheffield Hallam. This may include learning contracts, support workers equipment/assistive technology and software. There is an onsite assessment Centre, the Sheffield Regional Assessment Centre, where a range of disability specialists can carry out Study Needs Assessments. Daily drop in sessions are run, with no appointment needed.
