Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Our School Direct programme is a school-led teacher training course where, as a trainee teacher, you will become embedded within your school teaching team from day one.

Our programme has been written in collaboration with The University of Derby. Trainees are supported through school mentors, Derby University, link tutors, as well as within their School Direct peer support network.

Our bespoke package enables students to train in our local schools. Training days take place locally at Alfreton Nursery School or The University of Derby.

This Postgraduate Certificate in Education; primary (3-7 years) programme leads to qualified teacher status, together with 60 masters credits.

The programme fully prepares students for the practical demands of teaching, with experienced outstanding teachers sharing their knowledge and expertise.

Our innovative and integrated programme is at the cutting edge of teacher training, we aim to produce outstanding reflective practitioners who can provide creative, challenging and purposeful teaching and learning.

There are no formal examinations however you will be continuously assessed throughout your course so you become the best you can be for your future students and career as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

School placements

You will spend the Autumn and Summer term in your main host school, gradually increasing the amount of time spent in the role of a teacher; working closely with an experienced and skilled practitioner and mentor. To gain maximum experience, during the Spring term you will move to a complimentary placement school, with a contrast to your first placement. There will also be the opportunity to engage in Enhanced Placement weeks of your choice, again broadening your knowledge and experience.

We want all our students to gain maximum benefits from their School Direct placement schools. We will work with you to ensure you are placed in the right schools for you through our bespoke package of support.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

Personal qualities

We are looking for motivated students with a passion for teaching, with the ability to build caring relationships with students. You must be friendly and approachable and demonstrate a strong work ethic and resilience.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

University tuition fees, £9,250, are payable by you and you will be able to access the standard financial package of student support available to all students in England.

Alfreton Nursery School is an outstanding DCC Maintained School. The school has been consistently outstanding for 22 years, becoming accredited as a National Teaching School in Sept 2015 in recognition of its hard work and collective drive to constantly raise standards in school. As all Teaching Schools were de-designated in September 2021, Alfreton Nursery School is now a key partner of Potentia Teaching School Hub (TSH)

We provide opportunities for working in both urban and rural settings, within diverse communities. Specialisms include EYFS, KS1 and Primary as well as Secondary through David Nieper Academy.

The rich opportunities available from working in staff teams within our local Schools offers our graduates high quality teacher training opportunities.

We offer enhanced Teacher Training for professional studies, building inclusive practitioners, skilled in Special Educational Needs, behaviour for learning and closing the achievement gap, harnessing expertise from our strategic partners.

From day 1 you will be fully immersed in our staff teams, hitting the ground running; attending staff meetings and development days.

You will spend most of your school year in one host school, with a mid term placement in an alternative phase; gradually increasing the amount of time spent in the role of a teacher.

You will be assessed throughout the course by both your link tutor and school mentor, whilst receiving the most up-to-date training and pedagogy from the University of Derby and our teaching professionals.

About the accredited body

For our Primary and Secondary courses we work in partnership with The University of Derby to provide bespoke School Direct teaching programmes. Students are immersed in school practice for the duration of their course, spending days at the University to build on knowledge, experience and expertise.

Offering practical classroom experience throughout, our courses help students join a new generation of talented school teachers.

All trainee teachers are mentored by a teacher and link tutor.

Interview process

Trainees completing an Initial Teacher Training Programme must demonstrate the required competencies in the Fundamentals and English and Maths outlined by the Department for Education before Qualified Teacher Status is awarded.

To ensure trainees meet the required competencies you will be required to undertake and pass the University’s agreed assessment which will take place when you commence your course. Full details of the required competencies and assessment will be provided in due course. Please note it is the trainee’s responsibility to secure these fundamental skills.

The UCAS form requires candidates to provide the details of two referees. If candidates have studied within the last 5 years, an academic reference must be provided. Ideally, candidates should choose someone who can comment on their character and suitability to enter the teaching profession. The other reference should be a school or employer’s reference. Please be aware that if references are not appropriate, they may delay the processing of your application

Interviews will be held at Alfreton Nursery School.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
