PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
This is a Schools Direct tuition fee training programme. Trainees gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education). Candidates study at University College London Institute of Education one day per week and have training placements in two schools. Candidates also have weekly proessional studies sessions within the alliance.
School placements
Trainees will spend time in their first placement school in early September to gain experience of how the school functions. They will then spend two to three weeks at UCL IOE before returning to their placement one school in October, where they will observe lessons, teach parts of lessons and gradually build up to teaching classes. Trainees are observed regularly and get feedback on how to develop. Trainees will have a school based subject mentor. Placement two starts around February and here trainees teach more classes. During both placements trainees will have one afternoon of professional study sessions which run across the alliance, for all subjects and, at times, will bring primary and secondary trainees together.
Entry requirements
Qualifications needed
Applicants should have an honours degree 2:2 or better, with 50% of the content in the subject to be taught.
Candidates should also have GCSE English and Maths at C/5+.
We recommend that you aim to gain some experience in a classroom prior to interview.
Personal qualities
We are looking for candidates who are passionate about improving the life chances of young people, who want to be part of building the future and who see education as a process that goes beyond subject leading, to developing the whole child. Candidates need to be resilient; able to work as part of a team and find creative solutions. Teaching is hard work but rewarding and you will never be bored. It is an advantage if candidates have had experience working with young people.
Other requirements
All candidates will need to pass literacy and numeracy tests set by the university and trainees are subject to enhanced DBS checks.
Fees and financial support
Trainees pay fees directly to the university. Bursaries are available for some trainees, please follow the below link for further information:
About the training provider
Angel Islington Teaching School Alliance is lead by Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School which is an outstanding inner city 11-16 girls community school. We have been judged as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted since 2005 and our progress 8 scores are significantly positive.
As an alliance, we are committed to supporting the well-being of staff and students. Everything we do is based on our core belief that every student can achieve in whatever field they chose, regardless of their starting point or background.
Train with us and make a difference to the lives of young people, many of whom are disadvantaged. You will be part of a peer group of trainees across our alliance that receives high quality training and support. Our trainees undertake professional studies across the alliance, and at times, across phases, to maximise learning. We hope our trainees will go on to work locally and take advantage of our career long training opportunities. We are located close to good transport hubs (Angel Islington and Kings Cross). Islington is a thriving borough with many opportunities for social activities. We are close to central London and all that offers.
About the accredited body
University College London Institute of Education has been rated the number one centre in the world for education research and training. UCL IOE can be reached within 30 minutes from our main centre.
Interview process
Applicants will be interviewed remotely at one of our partner schools. Successful applicants will then be recommended to University College London Institute of Education (UCL IOE) for a second interview.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Candidates with disabilities and other needs are supported by DDA compliance and personal evacuation plans, with adaptations made to accommodate needs. Some sites are fully accessible while others (in older buildings) are not. We will interview candidates at accessible sites and ensure placements take place at suitable sites and with appropriate adjustments.
All placements offer mentor support. Trainees who are employed in Islington schools (apprentices) can access Islington staff support. Apprentices can also access support through their university.
