A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Our university partner for this programme is UCL Institute of Education (IOE), a global leader in teacher education. Their programmes are recognised by Ofsted as “outstanding” in every criterion across Primary and Secondary Education.

School Direct (Tuition Fee) is a route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Trainees join other student teachers on the established Languages PGCE programme at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), whilst undertaking their teaching experience at a host school with the Agnus Dei Teaching School Alliance.

This programme enables students to engage critically with a number of approaches and issues relating to languages education, such as the teaching of grammar, the incorporation of literature into lessons, target language use and the monitoring and assessment of pupils’ learning. It incorporates a range of approaches to effective, inclusive learning, and develops a student’s professionalism and critical awareness to a high level. Wherever possible, we provide opportunities for trainees to gain experience at Key Stage 5 (post-16 age range).

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).

You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with subject specialist mentors who support you through your school placements.

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placement at the host school or alliance. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, assignments and a portfolio (which links into continuing professional development in the induction year).

Interview process

Students are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places. Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines.

Initial Interviews are carried out by UCL in conjunction with St. Bonaventure’s School.

If you are successful at the school interview you will be invited to a second-stage interview at UCL Institute of Education. At your interview day you will take part in a combination of group and individual interviews with members of the programme team, and you may also be asked to undertake written or presentation tasks, depending on your subject. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and take a self-guided campus tour.

How school placements work

Financial support

You’ll get a bursary of £10,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

Qualifications

UCL Requirements:

A first or second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard from a recognised higher education institution.

UCL does not accept third-class degrees for teacher training programmes. The equivalence of all overseas degrees is verified by UCL according to their requirements for international qualifications. This is in addition to any assessments by NARIC.

Grade 5/ C or above in English and Maths GCSE’s.

UCL does not accept iGCSE English Language, Science or Maths. Applicants who do not hold the relevant GCSEs may demonstrate an equivalent standard: (http://www.equivalencytesting.com) achieving grade 5.

Personal qualities

We are looking for applicants who have the potential to become outstanding teachers, and who are able to work independently on their studies while training in a school context. A successful applicant will be highly self-motivated, hardworking and deeply reflective. In addition, applicants should be willing and ready to take on advice and feedback, adapt their teaching to suit different learning styles and work successfully in a professional whole-school environment.

  • Pass numeracy and literacy requirements: UCL arrangements tbc - pending publication of DfE requirements.

  • Confirmation you have the health and physical capacity to commence training.

  • A Disclosure and Barring Serve (DBS) certificate.

  • Applicants should visit the relevant UCL page to check the entry requirements in the key information panel. Applicants who are judged to not have sufficient knowledge in the relevant area may be required to undertake a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course.

  • UCL recommends that the applicant aims to gain some experience in a classroom prior to interview.
