A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Course summary
Red Kite’s ‘With SEND’ training has all the same features and benefits of a standard Red Kite course, but you’ll qualify with additional specialist skills in teaching pupils who experience significant difficulties in learning.
If you choose a ‘With SEND’ course, your first placement will be in a secondary school and your second placement will be in a special school and involve some additional SEND training from Special Needs Co-ordinators and experts from within the Red Kite training family.
You’ll still learn how to understand, plan and deliver the Chemistry Curriculum for 11-16 year olds, and gain Post 16 experience.
The ‘With SEND’ courses, developed in partnership with the Yorkshire Inclusive Alliance, include the same comprehensive, multi-level Red Kite training approach consisting of:
- Professional development days
- School placements
- University lectures
- Twilight sessions
- Conferences, tutorials and mini-placements focussed on Barriers to Learning, Special Educational Needs, Adult Mental Health, Behaviour, English as an Additional Language and Employment.
- Reading, research and reflections
During your training, you’ll learn to teach your specialist Science subject and spend time learning how to teach Biology and Physics to Key Stage 3, broadening your skill set to be able to teach secondary Science.
You’ll spend days with expert Science teachers learning how to bring Science to life for young learners, including how to identify and address common Science misconceptions, as well as how to deliver effective demonstrations and practicals such as how to demonstrate the sublimation of iodine, amongst many others.
By the end of the course, you will have worked in five different science departments, giving you access to a wide range of science specialists, and a fantastic opportunity to see the variety of schools that you may like to work in.
You’ll also have the unique opportunity to gain a PGCE from the University of Leeds, thanks to our exclusive partnership with their prestigious School of Education. This involves four days on campus four virtual days and three assignments, all of which are done by Easter so you can then relax and focus on teaching for the last part of course.
All Red Kite training both in out of school is led by practising teachers who are experts in their field, backed by a support network that is designed to let you focus on teaching make sure that on every step of your journey you feel challenged, supported and valued.
School placements
Red Kite Teacher Training is one of the largest school-based providers of teacher training in North and West Yorkshire, with a partner network featuring urban and inner-city schools in places such as Harrogate, Bradford and Leeds, as well as schools in more rural parts of Yorkshire.
This ensures that travel needs can be accommodated and also that trainees can explore how their own personal skills and attributes suit different educational settings and challenges.
All trainees undertake two main placements – the first running from the Autumn term until December and the second, in a contrasting school environment, running from January until late June. These are supported by specially trained mentors and designated Early Career Leaders.
There is a comprehensive programme of professional development days, hosted by practicing teachers, that take place in local training venues across North, South, East and West Leeds, Harrogate, Skipton, Richmond and Northallerton. There are also mini placements spread across the year, which give trainees the opportunity to broaden their experience in a range of schools and contexts.
The main focus of the SCITT course is the in-school placement, punctuated with university sessions, professional development training sessions, mini placements for enrichment in curriculum focus areas and subject knowledge and pedagogy training. Subject specific days are taught by practising teachers in their own school.

Entry requirements
Qualifications needed
An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in Chemistry (SEND) or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Other requirements
Experience of being in a school and/or working with young people is not essential, however, it will be beneficial during the application process. You can contact us to arrange experience within a school.
Admission is dependent upon satisfactory medical examination conducted by Red Kite’s preferred supplier.
Candidates who are offered a place on the course are required to complete a declaration regarding any criminal convictions.
Candidates are required to obtain clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) regarding their suitability for work involving children. Successful candidates will have these checks conducted at the expense of Red Kite.
Fees and financial support
Trainees are responsible for their own travel costs throughout the course.
Financial support from the training provider
Many Trainees apply for student finance in order to pay their fees with a Tuition Fee Loan and have access to Maintenance Loan. Additional financial support may be available if you’re a parent or have a disability.
Red Kite offers a monthly payment schedule for those planning to self-finance. For full time courses, this is £1,250 in October followed by 8 further monthly instalments of £1,000. For part time courses, for each year, an initial payment of £700 in October is due followed by 8 monthly instalments of £600.

Our training network consists of primary, secondary and special schools spread across West and North Yorkshire, meaning there will always be a location and school type that fits with your own personal characteristics and circumstances.
The Red Kite approach is geared towards providing each of our trainees with the help and guidance they need at each stage of their journey into teaching, with a dedicated support structure in place from day one which includes experienced mentors and a dedicated Early Career Leader. Our courses are designed to give you the skills and experience most sought after by employers – evidenced by the number of trainees securing a teaching post.
All of our courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE (worth 60 masters credits) awarded by the prestigious School of Education at the University of Leeds.
Interview process
Interviews are conducted on MS Teams by representatives from Red Kite Teacher Training and senior leaders from partnership schools.
A plan for a pupil activity and a workload prioritisation activity will need to be prepared for the interview.
You will be given the opportunity to meet current trainees, course leaders and be offered a school experience day before or after your interview.
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.

Training with disabilities and other needs
At Red Kite we believe the teachers we train are important role models – both in their schools and in the wider community – and that they should reflect the diversity around them and help create a culture that promotes and celebrates inclusion in all its forms.
In response to this, we have built up a network of ‘Diversity Champions’, whose role it is to promote conscious inclusion and ensure that every one of our trainees, whatever their personal circumstances, feel welcomed, supported and valued.
Over years we have worked with a number of individual trainees to tackle specific barriers they have faced, including:
- Working with a trainee with mobility issues to ensure their placement schools were able to arrange accessible parking, ground floor classrooms, bespoke pupil seating plans and a timetable that allowed them sufficient time to reach other areas of the school if required.
- Supporting trainees with autism to clarify expectations with their schools and oversee any necessary modifications to classroom layouts, lighting and sounds.
- Making course adjustments for trainees with dyslexia, such as sending PowerPoint presentations in advance of the training and working with them to develop strategies to help turn any particular perceived weaknesses such as spelling and short-term memory into a strength.
- Ensuring that all trainees learn about adult mental health awareness as part of their course.
