A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Once you have been made an offer for Initial Teacher Training with GLF Schools’ Teacher Training, you will be assigned to a host school in which you will complete the majority of your training, on a 2-1-2 basis (2 days in school - 1 day dedicated to professional studies - 2 days in school). In the spring term you will complete a second placement of six weeks in another partnership school to ensure that you experience contrasting educational settings / phases, which will greatly enhance your learning experience.

Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs), Initial Trainee Teachers (ITTs) and all practising teachers are judged against the national Teachers’ Standards. The GLF Schools’ Teacher Training programme covers the eight Teachers’ Standards and Part 2 that need to be met in order to receive Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). During the course of the year, you will be developing your evidence portfolio, a key part of obtaining QTS status.

You will receive weekly professional studies training, delivered by a member of the SCITT Leadership Team and/or specialists from our partnership schools; these sessions will cover the skills and knowledge required to meet the Teachers’ Standards and support you in developing your teaching skills over time. As a team we work hard to ensure that training meets the needs of all trainee teachers, and we pride ourselves on delivering a programme that is responsive to trainees’ needs.

Trainees can enhance their training year by choosing the PGCE uplift. Trainees who take this option will attend additional sessions with St Mary’s University during the training year, as part of their professional studies programme.

Interview process

Successful applicants will be invited to one of our recruitment days, which are usually held fortnightly. Interview locations can vary, however, they are generally hosted at schools within the Epsom area. The day will consist of:

  • a presentation to the interview panel
  • a subject knowledge test, GCSE level (secondary only)
  • a lesson planning exercise
  • a formal interview, which will include the SCITT Director or Operational lead on the interview panel
  • a teaching activity
  • a written exercise
  • activities to test literacy and numeracy

How school placements work

During your training year, you will undertake two placements in our partner schools ( We work with a number of partner schools who we know deliver high-quality teacher training.

Your main placement school will depend on the demand for your subject and you will teach ages 5-11 years (primary) or 11 to 16 years (secondary) during your time there. We will organise a second placement of 6 weeks for you in a contrasting partner school and we aim for both schools to be a maximum of an hour’s journey time. We do our best to accommodate the personal and family circumstances of trainees when arranging placements.

Secondary trainees will gain experience of Key Stage 5 (16-18 years) during their training year but will not be required to teach it, as well as opportunities to observe in a primary setting. Primary Trainees will gain opportunities to observe in both Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and secondary settings.


The course fees for 2020 to 2021 are as follows:

The additional fees for the optional PGCE element are £2,000 for trainees on the salaried route; salaried trainees are not eligible for student finance to cover PGCE costs so this must be financed privately.

Total fees (tuition fees and PGCE) are capped at £9,250 for the fee-funded route; most trainees will be eligible for a student loan but you should check your eligibility with the Student Loans Company.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £28,000
  • a bursary of £26,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £2,000 in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Modern Languages (French,Spanish) or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Financial support from the training provider

We offer flexibility of payment for trainees who are self-funding, but all fees must be paid before QTS is awarded.



By the start of the course, trainees must hold:

  • GCSEs at C grade/level 4 or above in Maths and English
  • UK Honours degree at 2:2 or above.

Any overseas qualifications should be verified with NARIC for equivalency BEFORE a UCAS application is submitted.

If your qualifications were gained in a non-English speaking country, you may be required to sit the IELTS; we require an overall grade of 7.0, with not less than 6.5 for Reading and 6.0 for Writing.

Personal qualities

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to a future teaching career, strong subject knowledge and the ability to interact with young people in and out of a classroom environment. We are also looking for strong literacy and numeracy skills, high standards of written English, a willingness to contribute to wider school life as well as personal qualities including: confidence, flexibility, resilience, ability to work in a group and under pressure, self-reflection and time management skills.

GLF Schools’ Teacher Training are committed to safeguarding and so we require all of our successful applicants to undertake an enhanced DBS check, as well as a health check, before they start their training.

Training with disabilities and other needs

GLF Schools SCITT will adhere to its Recruitment and Selection policy in relation to all new appointments.
