About the course

Early Years QTS

Primary – General Specialising in Early Years (Age Range 3-7) Our Primary programme is focussed on the study of teaching children between the ages of 3 and 7 years. You will gain qualified teacher status (QTS) in this one year course. The course will focus on the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and Key Stage One National Curriculum. You will also learn the general principles of primary curriculum design, planning and delivery, theories of learning and teaching pedagogy alongside developing practical insights and skills in the effective teaching and assessment of young children. You will be offered a series of school placements based in a Nursery setting, Reception or Key Stage One linking different perspectives of primary teaching to the development of your professional skills and subject knowledge in the classroom. You will teach and qualify for the 3 - 7 age range but will also experience short Key Stage Two placement as well. This course will allow you to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) a QTS is awarded by Haybridge Alliance SCITT and involves you gathering evidence against each of the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the course.

Trainees will spend a minimum of 120 days in school working towards the award of QTS. Trainees will also benefit from Professional Studies and Subject Pedagogy sessions that are led by a Subject Specialist. It is your responsibility to secure the required fundamental English and Mathematics skills and we will support you in this process to ensure you can demonstrate competence in the required fundamental English and Mathematics to gain QTS.

School placements

You’ll be placed in different schools during your training. You can’t pick which schools you want to be in, but your course will try to place you in schools you can commute to.

You will undertake a main placement during the Autumn and Summer terms in one of our partner schools. Your second placement will take place in the Spring term and will be in a contrasting school to your first placement. You will gain experience of working with a range of young people with differing backgrounds, abilities and needs. You will be training in school four days a week and attend Professional Studies sessions on one day. You will have a professional mentor as well as a school mentor in each placement school. We work with many schools across the West Midlands and trainees have the opportunity to visit a wide and diverse range of settings.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

Personal qualities

The SCITT Training Programme focuses on developing teaching skills. You should have a strong understanding of the subject you wish to teach before you start training. If your degree subject does not link closely to your chosen teaching subject, you may be required to undertake a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course before you begin your training year.

Other requirements

International If you studied outside of the UK, you should visit the National Academic Recognition Centre (NARIC) website to find out whether your qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an undergraduate degree. You will also need to obtain a Certificate of Good Conduct from the country or countries that they have lived in for the past five years in order to satisfy the DBS checks.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £8,500.

Tuition fees are £8500 and you can apply for a loan to cover these fees and/or a means tested maintenance grant via the Student Loan Company. About the training provider

Haybridge Alliance School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) is based at Haybridge High School and Sixth Form and is recognised as providing exceptional teaching and learning with vast experience in delivering and supporting Initial Teacher training (ITT) courses and placements.

Haybridge High School is a well-regarded 11-18 comprehensive school with a track record for excellence including four consecutive Ofsted ratings of ‘Outstanding’. Our Alliance schools are from a range of phases operating within diverse catchment areas with different challenges. Haybridge Alliance SCITT is the lead provider coordinating the SCITT programme and overall training experience. All secondary and primary schools in the Alliance will provide school-based placements for the training year recruited.

The quality of the programmes together with the support received by our trainees ensures that a high calibre of newly qualified teachers enter the profession.

Throughout the duration of the course a weekly programme of professional studies workshops are delivered by practising teachers from across the schools in the partnership. The focus of the programme is to address the development needs of the next cohort of teachers who will teach in our schools. A programme of subject studies is provided by local Specialist Leaders in Education. These sessions are designed to develop the understanding and delivery of a subject pedagogy, reviewing topics such as lesson planning and assessment. This stimulating programme of professional and subject studies explores the philosophy of education and the pedagogy associated with the teaching of a subject.

Interview process

During the day, we assess different skills via various tasks. Skills assessed through individual tasks: Time management and organisation Interaction with students Subject Knowledge Resilience and flexibility Articulacy Core Skills Skills graded 1, 2, 3 or 4 with 1 being the highest. Scores examined as part of the decision process and used to identify areas where candidates offered a place may need additional support. Formal interview with Primary Programme Lead to evaluate applicants’ rationale for wanting to become a teacher and suitability to carry out the role. Skills being assessed: resilience/flexibility/articulacy/core skills. Teaching Activity Applicants to prepare and deliver 30 minute activity on a specific topic with a group of students. This activity will evaluate applicants’ ability to facilitate students’ interaction with them and each other. Skills being assessed: time management/organisation/interaction with students/subject knowledge/resilience/flexibility/articulacy/core skills Subject knowledge interview Focuses on applicants’ subject knowledge together with ability to engage and inspire. Skills being assessed: subject knowledge/articulacy Presentation To undertake a ten minute presentation with a member of staff on the subject of “What makes an outstanding Teacher?” Skills being assessed: time management/organisation/articulacy/core skills. Written Task To assess applicants’ literacy skills and ability to process, synthesise and evaluate information. Skills being assessed: time management/articulacy/core skills. Mathematics Task To assess applicants’ numeracy skills and ability to process, synthesise and evaluate information. Skills being assessed: time management/organisation/core skills

International students

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
