Our trainees receive five weeks of core teacher training over the year which cover the nuts and bolts of teaching. Sessions focus on areas such as assessment, behaviour management, special educational needs, legal responsibilities, inspiring teaching and many more. These are all delivered by experts in their field, often practicing teachers, so you be confident that the content is both up to date and real life!
Our subject training centres around two intensive subject weeks led by a specialist tutor. This may be enhanced by external trainers and industry experts. These weeks develop subject knowledge, common misconceptions made by pupils.
Following phase one of core training, induction and subject training, you will spend 10 weeks on placement A. Initially co-teaching with experienced practitioners, you will develop your skills and confidence to be taking about 11 lessons a week by Christmas. After the winter break you will enhance your teaching with three weeks of intensive training and subject development before embarking on placement B at a contrasting school. You will again be teaching about 11 lessons a week for the six week period. You are then back to you original placement until mid-June, working on your weekly targets with “your” classes. As you are in school full time, you will feel like a member of staff! Our final placement week is an enhancement week at one of our partners such as Adult Education or alternative provision.
You are assessed continually during the year by your mentor. They will guide you with weekly review and target setting meetings and specific in school training. Your subject tutor will also be on hand to develop your skills. You will expected to complete a PGCE which will enhance your teaching through the academic study of pedagogy. This assessment for this element is through three assignments submitted in the spring and summer terms.
Initial Teacher Training is a professional course and we therefore discuss placement requests with our applicants. We aim to balance the requirements of the school, and it ethos, with the personality of you as a trainee. We also try to minimize travel time, as it is not the best use of that scarce resource! As we are a large partnership, both with number and geographically, we can meet most requests.
Our schools are either 11-16 or 11-18. You will be timetabled for classes across the 11-16 range, with additional post 16 experience if available in that school. If it is not, you will gain that experience in your second placement or enhancement week.
You will require a grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent) and a recognised degree which includes at least 60 credits at level 6.
We are looking for the best teachers for our children, so we want you to have a real desire to see them succeed. It is important that you are enthusiast about your subject - you will be teaching it for the foreseeable future, so you need to enjoy it! Finally, you need to be proactive, ready to put yourself out there to make a difference.
All applicants will be subject to and enhanced DBS check and a fitness to teach questionnaire carried hour by occupational health.
Fees and financial support
The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,250.
About the training provider
We are a partnership of 20 schools, colleges and educational establishments covering Yorkshire and The Humber. Our core training programme is delivered by expert trainers at our Hull base in September and January during our core training blocks. Once on placement you will be treated as a member of staff, being fully immersed in the life of a school and the education of it’s pupils.
Our training programmes were developed by educational experts to update traditional training routes and equip our trainees for teaching in the 21st century.

Our Secondary partnership ranges from Scarborough in the North to Lincoln in the South, whereas our Primary partners are predominantly in Hull. Whichever phase you wish to train in, we offer extensive enhancement opportunities in all Primary and Secondary, Post-16, EAL, SEND and Alternative Provision settings.
At Yorkshire and Humber Teacher Training we believe that our children deserve the very best teachers and therefore our selection process is rigorous. It consists of four elements:
-subject knowledge test
-educational knowledge test
These four elements combine to allow us to assess your potential to train to teach with Yorkshire and Humber Teacher Training. The interview allows us to get to know you as a person, your interests and rationale for applying. The taught session enables you to show you natural flair and how you interact with children. The subject knowledge test is used to identify areas for work before you start, and the educational test shows us that you have an interest in current educational practice and school life.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Meeting our trainees needs allows them to flourish in the classroom. We carry out extensive pre-course assessments which allows trainees with additional needs to access the support they require throughout the year.
In addition, we offer mental health training and a dedicated pastoral tutor to offer emotional support both during the training year and beyond.
