A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Your journey to becoming a teacher starts with an exciting pre-course induction in July. This is designed to introduce you to the course, the SCITT team and your fellow trainee teachers. You’ll start your training with us in September 2020 and our course is divided into four key phases:

Phase 1 (September - October):

  • Your training year officially begins in September and during your first week you’ll take part in induction days for the SCITT, your main placement school and the PGCE.
  • You will then spend four weeks being immersed in and observing all aspects of school life in a detailed school induction led by your personal mentor.
  • You will begin to teach and build up to 6 hours of solo teaching.
  • Our regular Professional Studies and Subject Studies sessions equip you with the essential skills that teaching your subject and managing your classroom requires.

Phase 2 (October - December):

  • At the heart of our SCITT programme is hands-on experience in schools and classrooms and during this period you will deliver 6 solo and 9 collaborative lessons.
  • You are given regular feedback on your progress and your teaching from your mentor, your Subject Course Leader and classroom practitioners.

Phase 3 (January - April)

  • You will experience a contrasting school placement.
  • Our on-going Professional Studies and Subject Studies continues your professional development throughout Term 2.
  • Your teaching timetable will increase to 12 hours of solo lessons and 3 hours of collaborative teaching.
  • Your teaching is developed through the continuous support from inspirational classroom practitioners, course leaders and mentors.
  • You will experience a primary school and take part in our inspirational carousel weeks where you will visit each school in our partnership for specialised training.

Phase 4 (April - July)

  • Your teaching timetable increases to 15 hours of solo lessons.
  • You will have collected evidence throughout the year to show how you are meeting all of the Teachers’ Standards and during this term you will excel with the continued support of your mentors and course leaders.
  • You will have completed your assignments towards your PGCE qualification (delivered in partnership with University of Worcester).
  • We run a range of sessions that prepare you for the transition to your role as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

Interview process

Assessment days usually take place in the partner school you have applied to and consist of a number of elements which allow us to assess whether you have the key attributes to become a trainee with Barr Beacon SCITT. You will complete:

  • A Subject Knowledge Assessment which is a 60-minute test of your subject knowledge

  • A 60-minute audit of your Fundamental English and mathematics skills

  • A teaching episode, during which you will teach a short 15-minute lesson in your subject to a small group of pupils.

  • A 5-minute pre-prepared presentation on Teaching Pedagogy on a given topic with a short Q&A session.

  • An Interview encompassing all aspects of becoming a teacher. There is an opportunity for you to ask any questions.

You will be judged against the following criteria:

  • Appropriateness of subject qualifications and knowledge and relevance to the teaching of the subject
  • Capacity to extend subject knowledge
  • Awareness of the role and responsibilities of a teacher and school environments
  • Resilience
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to teaching
  • Awareness of personal strengths and areas of development
  • Ability to engage and enthuse students in the subject
  • Ability to be flexible to meet the needs of the students and manage the learning environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Awareness of the provider and our programme

We run information days at our partner institutions offering first-hand classroom experience through the School Experience Programme. Prospective visits are welcomed before applying.

How school placements work

Trainees applying to Barr Beacon SCITT select a main placement school of preference on their applications. This partner school is known as the trainee’s main placement school. You can view which schools we work with and which subjects they offer here. All of our schools offer these subjects at age range 11-16 (Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4), with a Post-16 enhancement available. The only exceptions to this are our Business Studies and Psychology courses which are 14-19 (Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5) where a Key Stage 3 enhancement is possible.

Our trainees are based in their main placement school from September to December (Term 1) and from March to June (Term 3).

From January to March (Term 2) trainees will spend time in a contrasting school placement, sometimes referred to as ‘second placement’. Arrangements for the contrasting placement school are made centrally by the SCITT in a timely manner once the course has commenced. A trainee’s emerging teaching strengths and areas of development, locality and personal circumstances are taken closely into consideration when making these arrangements.

Trainees are supported, developed and assessed by our trained and experienced team of Professional Mentors and Subject Mentors in the same way across all of our placement schools. Additionally, trainees also receive:

  • Central, whole-cohort Professional Studies sessions to learn about the key topics in education

  • Specific Subject Studies sessions, led by a dedicated, subject-specific course leader to impart the pedagogy of teaching your subject

  • The opportunity to observe best practice in a range of key areas of teaching in a number schools through our carousel weeks

  • An opportunity to observe Key Stage 2 teaching and consider the Key Stage 2 to 3 transition through a short placement in a primary school.


The course fees for 2020 to 2021 are as follows:

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £28,000
  • a bursary of £26,000

With a scholarship or bursary, you’ll also get early career payments of £2,000 in your second, third and fourth years of teaching (£3,000 in some areas of England).

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Physics or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

We require the following qualifications for our course:

  • Degree: A UK degree (or equivalent), usually an Honours degree, ideally (but not necessarily) in a subject applicable to your teaching subject. Normally a degree classification of a least a 2:2 is required.

  • GCSEs: At least a Grade C or Grade 4 at GCSE (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics is essential for all applicants.

Other requirements

At Barr Beacon SCITT we are guided by the Department for Education’s guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2019) and all offers are subject to enhanced DBS clearance.

We have a responsibility to ensure that trainees have the health and physical capacity to teach. This will take the form of a questionnaire prior to the commencement of the course.

All trainees are subject to a prohibition to teach check, a disqualification check and a right to work check. We may contact references for further information.
