Our programme prepares our trainees to be excellent teachers to enable them to deliver high quality, purposeful and inclusive learning experiences, inspiring a love of learning and successful outcomes.
Salaried trainees may have responsibility for their own class and may be expected to teach a higher percentage of the teaching timetable compared to an non-salaried trainee.
This is achieved through:
A school-based programme where trainees work alongside expert colleagues four days a week.
Trainees develop their knowledge and understanding of teaching through a weekly professional studies day delivered at their regional training centre or through remote learning.
All training is underpinned by current high-quality evidence and research.
The General Professional Studies programme combines a pedagogical approach to learning with practical strategies for use in the classroom.
Trainees will gain experience from practising teachers as well as specialist speakers in behaviour management, special educational needs and health and well-being.
A two-week induction programme which provides every trainee with the knowledge and skill-base to prepare them for their placement schools, where they will observe expert colleagues in preparation for teaching.
Dedicated mentor support throughout the programme with weekly observations and mentor meetings where targets are set to support a trainee’s development.
Specialist subject and curriculum knowledge support with dedicated subject tutors.
Experience and understanding of the key stages on either side of the training programme.
Course assignments are designed to help trainees demonstrate they have met the curriculum through planning, preparation and assessment of pupils. The programme is assessed through continual course work; there are no final exams.
Applicants apply for their preferred school (A) placement where they will spend the majority of their training year.
Trainees are required to complete a second (B) placement as part of training.
The second placement (B) will be a minimum of four to six weeks in a contrast setting. This enables us to ensure that we offer trainees a breadth of experience in their training year. Every effort is taken to place trainees in a school geographically convenient for them, without compromising their training needs.
Our programme is full-time (term time only). Trainees spend four days a week in school and one day a week at their regional training hub (Debden Park High School) or via online training sessions.
A minimum 2:2 degree of a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualification.
GCSE grade C / 4 (or standard equivalent) in mathematics and English. (Applicants who do not hold these qualifications will be asked to sit a GCSE equivalency test or asked for other evidence to demonstrate their ability).
If an applicant has overseas qualifications, this will need to be supported with a written National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) statement of comparability (paid for by the applicant).
TKAT SCITT will arrange Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses, where necessary, subject to a conditional offer made.

TKAT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students, and expects all staff, trainees and volunteers to share this commitment.
Trainees on the salaried route will be paid on an unqualified teachers’ pay scale 1 (minimum) at the discretion of each individual employing school, and as advertised.
The cost of the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) fee is met by the employing school.
The cost of the Post- Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Masters Credits (optional) is £2,000 and is met by the trainee.
Please note that salaried trainees are not eligible for student finance and therefore would need to self-fund their PGCE fee.

Debden Park High School is an Outstanding School within The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT). It is the School Direct Lead School for the Essex training hub providing secondary (11-16) and primary (5-11) school-based teacher training.

Trainees can gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the option to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Masters’ credits. Our HEI Provider responsible for the PGCE is Leeds Beckett University.
We offer a bespoke training programme: every training session is delivered by a highly skilled, experienced teacher. Our training is relevant and responsive to current developments in education and provides a hands-on approach to classroom practice.
Candidates take part in a selection and recruitment process designed to assess their suitability to train to teach.
The aim of the interview process is for candidates to demonstrate why they have chosen teaching as a career and allow us to see their potential as a teacher.
The interview will take place online and the administration team will take you through a step-by-step process.
If successful, candidates will be made a conditional offer of a place on the TKAT SCITT programme, subject to all course requirements being met.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Excellent communication with our ITT partner schools enable them to meet the needs of trainees wherever possible. Individual support programmes are established at the start of the training programme to ensure trainees’ needs are met.
Pastoral support of trainees is essential. TKAT SCITT staff are trained in mental health awareness and all trainees receive professional training to have coping strategies for their mental health and well-being throughout the training programme.
