Trainees on Kaizen School Direct programmes train for 4 days per week in school from the beginning of their training. This school-based approach means that trainees feel part of their home-school from the beginning of the course. In the remaining day, trainees attend Professional and Subject Studies training with Kent and Medway Training (KMT) who is our School Centered Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) provider. Salaried trainees also spend time in a contrasting (B-placement) school as part of their training.
All trainees are assigned an in-school mentor who is a teacher who supports them through their training by providing regular feedback and meeting with them on a weekly basis. In addition KMT Lead Mentors and Hub Directors meet with trainees regularly in order to support them through the process.
Salaried trainees have a maximum of a 70% teaching timetable and due to their prior experience would be expected to teach from the outset.
All candidates apply for the specific Kaizen school which they wish to train at for their A-placements. Candidates are strongly advised to make contact with the school and gain school experience before applying to a particular school.
In addition candidates will be expected to completed a B-placement at a contrasting school. This is decided by Kent and Medway Training (KMT) in conjunction with the trainee and is usually local to the A-placement school.
The required qualifications for entry onto ITT courses are:
‘O’ Level/GCSE A-C pass grade/new grade Level 4 - 9 in English & Mathematics (and Science for Primary applicants). See note 1.
A degree classification of 2:2 or better is required. For Secondary courses this ideally needs to be in an area relevant to the subject in which you will be training. See note 2.
(1) KMT will advise potential applicants concerning any equivalency tests where required.
(2) Subject relevant experience may be taken into account where the degree does not meet this requirement.
Other qualities we will look for include:
At least 3 years work/life experience (ideally in an educational setting).
Strong motivation to work with children/young people
Recent experience of working with youngsters
Recent experience of observing or working in a school
A genuine interest in how children/young people learn
Flexibility and enthusiasm
Awareness of and the resilience to cope with the demands and pressures of teaching
An appreciation of the benefits of life-long learning
A fluency in written and spoken English
We are not in a position to accept applications from non-EU citizens who do not meet the residency requirements to receive public funding.
We are not able to proceed with a registration for the School Direct Salaried Programme from those not currently holding residency status in the UK, unless that registration is completed in conjunction with one of our consortium schools.
All applicants must have recent experience of UK schools before starting their course. It is also highly recommended that some experience be gained during the application stage, as it will strengthen both applications and interview discussions.
Salaries are calculated using the unqualified teachers’ pay scale for Salaried Trainees and will be decided by the training school. You will have the opportunity to discuss your salary at interview.

The Kaizen Teaching School Alliance is a well established and growing Alliance of West Kent schools, both Primary and Secondary, that offers School Direct salaried and un-salaried teacher training placements.
As an Alliance, we are passionate about teaching and learning and committed to providing exceptional world-class initial teacher training. We have a cultural mix of students in our schools who are keen to achieve and we have a number of schools judged by Ofsted to be ‘Outstanding’.
The Kaizen Teaching School Alliance works closely with our School-Centred Initial Teacher Training provided (SCITT), Kent and Medway Training, to ensure that all of our trainees receive high quality mentoring and following a training programme that is suited to their individual skills and needs.
Trainees spend the majority of their training year in the classroom, learning from outstanding teachers, receiving 1-1 subject and professional development and studying the teaching profession.
All trainees have the opportunity to experience contrasting schools in their two placements and the majority of our trainees go on to be employed within the alliance. Trainees have excellent opportunities for career development and are supported through further training during their Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year.
Kent and Medway Training (KMT) is a highly regarded and successful Schools Centered Initial Teacher Training Provider (SCITT) which has been training teachers for over 25 years. They work in collaboration with a variety of schools, including those within the Kaizen Alliance. They offer training which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the partnership with Leeds Beckett University gives trainees the opportunity to access a PGCE Top-Up qualification. Trainees learn to teach in the classroom, guided by experienced, current practitioners, which enables them to develop their own skills and techniques, equipping them for their future career.
All applications are reviewed by the Kaizen Teaching School Alliance Director and the school which you have applied for. If the school wishes to invite you for interview you will then be contacted to arrange a suitable date and time for interview at the school you have applied to.
The interview process usually takes a morning or afternoon and will involve a face-to-face interview with a representative from Kent and Medway Training (KMT), the school Professional Tutor or a member of Senior Leadership and the Head of Department.
Candidates are expected to teach a short lesson in the subject they have applied for which they will be given a topic for in advance in order to prepare. The lesson is used to judge candidates capacity to train to teach and is not judged using the same standards as a qualified teacher.
Candidates are also expected to complete a literacy assessment and subject assessment at interview.
All candidates are expected to bring identification and qualification documentation to interview. The interview invitation letter will detail the documentation required for each candidate.
If you are successful at interview further conditions such as a successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, 10 days school experience and successful Skills Tests may be applied prior to you beginning your training.
