Course summary

You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning.

Our mentors are outstanding and experienced teachers, and are required to undertake a rigorous training programme to develop their skills including coaching, effective classroom observation and feedback skills. You will be in the safest of hands as a trainee within the Redhill SCITT team. Our in-house training is delivered by leading professionals with many years of experience of both teaching and training teachers.

A list of our partner schools is available on our websites: www.redhillteachertraining.org.uk and www.inspiringleadersscitt.com and we have the capacity to train over a number of subjects across these schools. Whilst we cannot guarantee a placement at a particular school, prior to interview, we will take into account individual requests and location and travel will always be factored in to our placements.

This course leads to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. Successful completion of the PGCE at level 7 gives you up to 60 Masters level credits.

School placements

Most of your training will take place within the environment of the employing school. Training is delivered by expert and outstanding practitioners, enhanced by attendance at our training sessions and academic sessions at NTU. You will then undertake a six week alternative placement in the first half of the spring term. You will gain experience at KS3 and 4 with the potential of experience in KS5 wherever possible.

We will carefully consider the right school for your placement, taking into account your location, your qualifications and your previous experience. We will always try to involve your prospective placement school in your interview where practical. During your training you will have the full support of the SCITT team.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in Design and technology or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

We are looking for ambitious trainees who are passionate and enthusiastic about their subject area and have a desire to share that with young people. We are looking for a sound level of subject knowledge and an ability to share this knowledge with others. Experience of working with children or young adults is ideal. Whilst there is no longer a requirement for trainees to have experience in schools prior to applying, it is useful to remember that experience observing in schools will help prospective trainees prepare for their interview and their ongoing training.

Other requirements

You will need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (formerly known as a Criminal Records Bureau or CRB check) and to provide information relating to Childcare Disqualification regulations.

  • We have a ‘Readiness for Teaching’ program designed to enhance previous school experience or provide you with valuable insights into teaching while school experience is unable to proceed. If you would like to join these free and informative sessions then please check the dates on the Inspiring Leaders website.

Salary

You will receive a salary, which is paid by Sutherland House School.

About the training provider

The Redhill Academy Trust and Teaching Hub provide high-quality secondary teacher training across a wide variety of subjects. Our programme leads to QTS and PGCE. We are especially interested in applications to Maths, English, Science, Languages and Humanities as there is a general shortage of teachers in these subjects locally. Our programme is accredited by Inspiring Leaders, an outstanding SCITT, based in the East Midlands.

Our teacher training offers trainees an exceptional level of support, tailored to individual needs and delivered by trained mentors and coaches. Trainees have the opportunity to learn from classroom teachers and practitioners who are experts in their field. A commitment to train future teachers and leaders sits at the heart of our core purpose and ethos as a Trust. Our schools are based in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire and the wide range of settings and contexts enables us to provide a diverse range of experiences for all our trainees.

Interview process

Our admissions team will conduct an initial check, to determine whether you meet the eligibility criteria. We will then consider your application, and agree whether to invite you to interview. If you are selected for interview, you will be sent information about the course and about the interview process, together with guidance on how to prepare. The interview process will take place online or at one of our partner schools.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)

Training with disabilities and other needs

As an equal opportunities provider we are well equipped to support trainees with additional needs. For more information please feel free to contact us and we will do our best to support your application.
