PGCE with QTS

A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

You will visit the University throughout the course of the programme.   • 2 contrasting school placements
  • A University-led PGCE programme leading to the award of PGCE with QTS and 60 Masters Level credits on completion of 3 academic assignments that are related to educational practice.
  • Guided and tailored support from your dedicated school-based mentor, classroom teacher and Professional Programme lead in partnership with the University of Cumbria Programme Lead.

School placements

Where possible, school placements are arranged to meet the needs of the trainee. We aim, where possible to ensure trainees are not travelling for more than 40 minutes at the start and end of the day. Consideration is also given to those trainees who don’t drive. Trainees will complete 2 contrasting placements during their training year. September- December and January- June. The programme is designed in such a way that trainees have numerous opportunities to visit other schools/settings throughout the course of the programme.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in Modern Languages (Spanish) or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Equivalency Test requirements will be discussed at interview and in collaboration with the University of Cumbria.

Interview process

When an application is received, it will be checked against initial criteria for qualifications and experience. Following this, the everyonelearning@ Hawthorns, Kingfisher, Mossley Hollins Teaching Partnership will read the application and assess the applicants commitment and motivation to teach, ability to reflect on practice and enthusiasm for the profession. Relevant and recent school experience will be considered and references referred to. Successful applicants will be invited to participate in either a virtual or face to face interview at Mossley Hollins High School . Secondary applicants will be expected to:

  • lead a 20 minute subject lesson with a class of children followed by 2 minutes of questions
  • Compile a written response to a think piece, in advance of the interview day. This will be assessed for spelling, punctuation and grammar together with a general understanding of the think piece and an ability to reflect.
  • Complete a subject knowledge audit
  • Participate in a formal 20 minute interview. This is conducted by experienced professionals from the everyonelearning@Teaching Partnership. Upon successful completion of the interview process, School Direct Places are then offered in partnership with The University of Cumbria. All School Direct places will lead to qualified teacher status (QTS) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) validated by the University of Cumbria

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
