A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Teach Maidenhead trainees are allocated a subject mentor to oversee day to day development and to work on planning, delivery, marking and assessment. The subject mentor also monitors and observes trainees, helping to ensure they develop the qualities necessary to meet the national Teacher Standards. Each school also has its own Teach Maidenhead Professional Coordinating Mentor who oversees the subject mentors, while weekly Professional Studies sessions are led by experts from across the five schools.

At the heart of The University’s approach is the fact that music teachers must be musicians as well as teachers. They must teach in a way that allows their pupils to develop their own musical understanding..

You will be taught by experts in the field of music in education, and together you will examine a range of pedagogical approaches to music teaching.You will learn in our purpose-built music and music technology studios with extensive resources of music, instruments and equipment.

The University works closely with Teach Maidenhead, planning and delivering training programmes in collaboratively.

The programme comprises two main aspects: Professional Studies and Subject Studies: Professional Studies develops insights into general aspects of education essential for entrants to the teaching profession. It gives consideration to whole-school issues, such as behaviour management, special educational needs and educational theories that contextualise the teaching of your subject.

Subject Studies enables trainees to study the teaching of their chosen subject. This includes consideration of aspects such as: the nature of the subject in the secondary school; its place in The National Curriculum; what is taught; how it is taught; how it is assessed; providing for young people with different backgrounds and abilities; teaching in accordance with examination specification requirements; and using ICT effectively to facilitate learning.

Trainees will be assessed against the eight Teachers’ Standards, based on the evidence of their teaching, wider contribution to school life and ability to reflect on and evaluate these experiences. Assessment will be carried out in school and moderated by University tutors.

Trainees are required to write three assignments during the year. These are designed to deepen their reflection on their school experience in the light of educational research, and to develop their ability to research their own practice. As well as being assessed in their own right, the assignments will contribute evidence towards the assessment against the Teachers’ Standards.

School placements

The five Teach Maidenhead schools (Furze Platt Senior School, Desborough College, Altwood School, Cox Green School and Holyport College) are all located in Maidenhead which is halfway between London and Reading, one mile from the M4 and six miles from the M40. The five main Teach Maidenhead schools are located in the four corners of the town, a few miles away from each other. Maidenhead benefits from excellent rail and road connections which will improve still further when Crossrail opens. Maidenhead is 15 minutes from Reading University by train and 20 minutes from London on a non-stop train.

The training course consists of two placements, one main placement and a second lasting six weeks which takes place half way through the main placement. All five schools are able to offer trainees the opportunity to teach a secondary school age range of 11 to 18.

The course itself is structured broadly as follows :

  • Enrolment at The University of Reading during the first week of September
  • An intensive week of subject matter study during the second week of September
  • Six weeks where the trainee spends two days at the university and three in school
  • A week focusing on the PGCE and tutorials
  • A further six weeks spending five days in school
  • A week shared between the university and an induction at the second placement school
  • Christmas break
  • Six weeks at the second placement school (beginning of January to mid- February) – we aim to inform trainees of their second placement location between September and November
  • A week focusing on the PGCE and tutorials
  • An intensive week of subject matter study at the end of February at the university
  • Ten weeks at the main placement school with a break for Easter
  • Two weeks of enrichment organised by the University of Reading.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in music or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

All successful trainees:

  • will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

  • will be expected to be able to travel to and between the five Teach Maidenhead schools and our accrediting provider The University of Reading.

  • will need to be available to start the training course on 1st September 2023

  • will need to provide original evidence of qualifications.

  • must be able to prove they have the right to study and work in the UK.

  • will need to complete a medical questionnaire for the university

About the training provider

Teach Maidenhead was founded in 2013 and provides a unique school based learning opportunity in partnership with the University of Reading. Our partnership consists of five secondary schools (rated outstanding or good) and includes a service which supports children in mainstream educational settings with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). All teach students from ages 11-18, giving trainee teachers the opportunity to teach the entire secondary age range. Teach Maidenhead schools are conveniently located, meaning trainees can engage with all five schools in the partnership and experience a diverse and contrasting range of teaching and training practices.
Teach Maidenhead works closely with the University of Reading to plan and deliver training programmes. The support provided to trainees is first rate, with intensive subject-based training from experts at the University of Reading and close mentoring from experienced teachers in each school. Another popular feature of our training programme is the weekly professional studies training sessions which involve all trainees, and are led by experts from across the Teach Maidenhead group.
Students and staff warmly welcome trainee teachers and recognise their valuable contribution to the school community. Successful trainees have access to opportunities to apply for teaching posts at all five schools, each of which provides an exemplary level of support to NQTs in their first year as well as further career development and opportunities. All trainees gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) as well as 60 credits towards a Masters Degree.

The University of Reading’s Institute of Education is an established provider of high-quality training and research. They are ranked 7th in the UK for Education (The Guardian University League Table 2020) and have been consistently in the top 10 for over a decade. Committed to developing caring, reflective, professional teachers, they have well-established partnerships with over 300 schools in Berkshire and the surrounding area. Ofsted report that the “effective relationships with partner schools support the development of high quality teaching and trainees that are well-prepared to work in the region’s schools.” ITE inspection report, September 2016.

Interview process

The recruitment process is rigorous and thorough, designed to get the best match of applicant to the places available. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for one interview at the Teach Maidenhead school usually where they will carry out their main placement. A representative from the University of Reading may also attend for part of the process. During this process, applicants will undertake a range of activities to judge their suitability for a career in teaching. These will include:

  • An introduction to Teach Maidenhead training courses
  • A tour of the school and opportunity to meet key staff in the school
  • The opportunity to meet with members of the subject department
  • If time permits the chance to observe some teaching
  • At least one written activity which may take the form of a written piece or may involve a practice exam paper of the subject the applicant wishes to train to teach
  • A group activity or student panel, where appropriate
  • A formal interview with a member of Teach Maidenhead (Senior Leadership Team member), the subject Head of Department and possibly a representative from Reading University

We aim to feed back to applicants regarding the outcome of their interview within 48 hours of attending. Should applicants be unsuccessful we will endeavour to provide feedback also within that time limit.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
