About the course

  • Why study School Direct at Middlesex University? The School Direct Training programme is available to high-quality graduates and our partnership schools offer places on both the tuition fee route and the salaried route. The salaried route means you will be able to earn a salary while you train, and aims to attract career changers and high quality candidates in hard to fill subjects.

At Middlesex, the School Direct programmes are closely aligned to the PGCE routes, meaning you will benefit from the provision of a range of high-quality central training, delivered by research-leaders and academics, who are widely published across disciplines such as multilingualism, diversity and childhood development.

All of our School Direct programmes provide the opportunity to gain a postgraduate qualification, which can be used towards a Masters award in the future. This will enable you to develop your skills for teaching and for understanding the interrelationship between learning and teaching, as you develop into a critically reflective practitioner. Our Primary School Direct programme is aligned with the PGCert Teaching qualification.

Our extensive history of delivering leading education courses ensures that you will benefit from the guidance of expert tutors who bring a wealth of professional experience to their teaching.

Course content

  • What will you study on the School Direct (QTS)? As a school-led route the great majority of your time will be spent in your training school, and the content and focus of many aspects of the training programme will be targeted to meet your individual needs, by utilising the resources of the school and their alliance partners. In addition, at Middlesex you will also benefit from access to the University’s extensive resources, including those provided by the library and student support services.

The Middlesex School Direct programme provides you with a series of subject enhancement sessions, and a programme of professional studies which will be run at the University. These may include sessions which:

  • Allow you to visit a variety of partnership schools and non-formal educational sites to enhance learning in specialist areas.
  • Provide you with opportunities to enhance your knowledge and pedagogy of your subject, or specialist areas of the curriculum.
  • Develop your understanding of key contemporary issues within education, such as those around inclusion or EAL and SEND provision in schools.

Interview process

There are three stages:

  1. Your UCAS application form

  2. An informal interview with two Headteachers from the Harrow Teaching School Alliance to explore your application with you in person (“live” shortlisting) (30 mins)

  3. A formal interview to assess your skill set against the Teacher Standards including group task, teaching, reflecting, written task and a marking task. You will be interviewed by a panel of Headteachers during the process. (half a day)

4.Instead of the basic skills assessment, the DfE has asked Lead Schools to assess suitability for teaching including your subject knowledge for teaching and competency in the fundamental skills of English and Maths. We insist upon competence to GCSE grade 4 or equivalent.

How school placements work

Once successful, any of the Headteachers involved can offer you a placement at their school.

If more than one school would like you, you have the chance to visit each school and choose which you would prefer.

If there was a specific school or you are currently at a school, we can try and accommodate this too.

The age ranges of our primary schools are ages 5-11 although we can support ages 3-7 is desired.

We have over 20 schools in our partnership.

You will have the host school all year but also a second 6-week placement within the alliance and a KS3 experience at Secondary School, within your local cluster.

Apart from University training on a Wednesday, you spend all other time in school, matching the working hour expectations of the school. This includes access to staff training and involvement in school life - from a Sumer Fair to a Parent Evening.

The more you put in, the more ready you will feel when you have your first class as a qualified teacher next September!

All our trainee “Associate Teachers” are paid on a full-time salary on the Unqualified Teacher Scale (UPS) 1.

They are employed by the host school for the duration of the course. This means as an employee of the school, they must abide by the school’s policy, procedures and ways of working, being accountable within the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD).

As this is a SALARIED COURSE, there are NO FEES TO PAY as this is covered through funding.

You receive a salary each month. NQTs the following September start from £27k+ a year which is higher as you will be in Outer London!

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.



  1. GCSE pass in English, Maths, and Science or equivalent including NARIC recognised documentation.

  2. Instead of the basic skills assessment, the DfE has asked Lead Schools to assess suitability for teaching including your subject knowledge for teaching and competency in the fundamental skills of English and Maths. We insist upon competence to GCSE grade 4 or equivalent.

  3. Degree at least graded 2:2 or higher, including NARIC recognised documentation.

  4. Desirable evidence of recent academic study.

  5. Successful DBS check and no previous convictions or barred from working with children

Personal qualities

We seek experience of working with children as you will be teaching classes from the day you start!

We look for transferrable skills for career changers.

We want to see enthusiasm, passion, organisational skills, an understanding of educational pedagogy and practice.

Above all else, every school has rigorous Safeguarding procedures and high expectations with all prospective staff to understand Safeguarding in its widest sense and having read Keeping Children Safe in Education (Part 1) - ensure it is the most recent version.

It will be hard. there are long hours, rainy wet play days and lots of planning and marking!

About the training provider

Priestmead is the Lead School for ITT within the Harrow Teaching School Alliance.

The Alliance is made up of Good and Outstanding schools - Harrow has over 93% and was in the top 10 performing Boroughs of London for KS2 in the 2019 results.

We work together as a partnership, ensuring a consistency of approach, so all our trainees perform brilliantly - from shared professional development opportunities, to regular email updates to also ensuring you have a strong second placement and KS3 placement.

Unique to our programme, is we offer a residential experience with a contrasting set of schools in the North of England, helping our trainees to see education in different localities.

Finally, although you are trainees, we call you our Associate Teachers! We see your careers starting in Harrow and progressing to whichever role you aspire for within our Harrow network.

Outstanding candidates are guaranteed NQT positions for the following September!

About the accredited body

Middlesex University provides an excellent academic programme focusing on reflective practice as well as developing strong subject knowledge.

They hold Wednesday training sessions at their Hendon campus.

The accredited course stems from reflective practice so your coursework links to what you do day to do.

Your allocated mentors also receive regular training to ensure we all work cohesively to enable you to achieve your best!
