A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This course is offered through the School Direct Tuition route in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton. Successful completion of this route will lead to recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), along with 40 credits at Master’s level that can be used towards our Masters degree in education.

This year long, full-time course will train you to teach secondary school pupils aged 11-18. (120 days in school; 50 days approx at university)

The course structure includes a block placement in the Autumn Term, with university based professional development days each week. This is followed by a second placement in a partner school in the Spring Term, which includes 1 week in a partner primary school.

During your training you will spend the majority of your time in your placement school, during which time you will be required to teach across two different key stages.

Student teachers will be assessed throughout the year by a university based tutor alongside the school based professional tutor and subject mentor (School based tutor). This will be through formal professional development and learning activities, school based core written tasks and lesson observations.Student teachers will meet weekly with their school based tutor and engage in a programme of school based training alongside the university training. A record of professional development will be completed across the year as a formative and summative record of a student teacher’s progress towards the Teachers’ Standards.

School placements

Student teachers will complete a total of 2 school placements across the year. The main block placement will take place in Highfields Secondary School with a second placement in Aldersley High School.

The schools are situated within 5 miles of each other to the north and south of Wolverhampton.

The primary placement week will take place in a local partnership school.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

You must have a degree comprising 300 HE credit points of which 60 must be at level 6 of the QCF. You do not need to have a degree in a particular subject or discipline, but you should be able to demonstrate the subject knowledge required in readiness to train to teach your specialist subject.

To have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 (previously Grade C) in the GCSE examinations in English, Mathematics.

Please note – You will be required to provide evidence of your original GCSE qualifications.

ConnectEd is a school direct provider who works in close strategic partnership with the University of Wolverhampton and Birmingham City University to offer primary and secondary school led programmes.

Successful primary students will carry out their placements in partnership schools that have the capacity,expertise and proven track record in training students to become effective teachers.

Due to the extensive nature of our partnership, ConnectEd can offer a wide range and breadth of experience to ITT students. For example our Special schools will offer support and training to trainees wishing to specialise in working with children and young people with Special Education and Disabilities.

Gaining school experience can make a valuable contribution to your application process. Connected offer structured pre - placement experience work experience days to prospective applicants that will take place in one or more of our partnership schools. Completing a 5 day ‘Passport to Teaching Programme’ can guarantee you an interview on the School Direct Programme.

Interview process

Following the application to UCAS, the University of Wolverhampton will complete the initial eligibility checks. If the applicant is successful, they will be invited to an interview/ assessment day which will be jointly led by the University of Wolverhampton and colleagues from the ConnectEd School Direct Secondary Partnership.

The interview/assessment day will comprise a formal presentation, a literacy and numeracy task, a subject knowledge activity to assess subject proficiency with a group of young people, followed by a formal interview.

Candidates will be informed of the outcome of the interview via the UCAS portal.
