A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Course Structure: Up to 80 days faculty-based training (face to face or directed study) Up to 120 days school-based training and experience (practising and school staff led) Time in school will be sub-divided into: School based training – non-assessed School based training – assessed practise

There are Four Assessed Modules:

  • Core Curriculum worth 20 Credits at Level 7 Assessment:- 1 x 3000 word equivalent
  • Foundation Curriculum worth 20 Credits at Level 7 Assessment: 1 x 3000 words equivalent
  • Professional Studies and Leadership worth 20 Credits at Level 7 Assessment: 1 x 3000 words equivalent
  • School Based Training 1 &2 Assessment: Pass/Fail - Successful Practice & Standards Met

Depending on your specific qualifications and background, the Professional Studies and Leadership module gives you an opportunity to specialise in a particular area. For example:

School placements

School Experience 1 is in the autumn term, you will complete preliminary visits and a block placement. This placement will develop your understanding of the range of teaching, learning and professional skills as outlined in the Teachers’ Standards (DFE, 2012) in the context of one to one and small/focus group teaching building up to taking more responsibility for whole class teaching. You will be summatively assessed against the Teachers’ Standards.
School Experience 2 For some School Direct trainees, placement 2 will be in a different school but you will return to your first school for placement 2. ConnectEd Partnership will organise your placements. Part 2a is in the Spring Term, you will complete preliminary visits and a block placement. You will work with children and small groups identified by school data to support ‘closing the gap’ targets and will teach all core subjects and a selection of foundation subjects. You may also undertake some whole class teaching. You will be formatively assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. Part 2b is in the Summer Term and will be in the same school as Part 2a. You will complete preliminary visits and a block placement. You will start with a minimum teaching commitment of 60%, building up to 80% of the timetable by the mid-point. This placement will be summatively assessed against the Teachers’ Standards.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

The interviewers will be looking for you to demonstrate a range of qualities which will include:

  • A commitment, and understanding of primary education and the role of the teacher
  • A positive attitude towards children and to working with children
  • Ability to self-evaluate, to problem solve and to show resilience
  • Ability to build relationships quickly, to value others and to get the best out of them
  • Good general knowledge and clear, accurate spoken and written English

How we select our Trainees The selection process includes a collaborative approach between BCU and ConnectEd Partnership. Candidates will be assessed on: Personal and Professional Qualities Ability to work at Masters Level Evidence that prospective trainee has been observed in a primary teaching situation and demonstrated to the satisfaction of an experienced teacher/headteacher that they have potential to be successful A broad range of subject knowledge, especially in English, mathematics and science The ability to engage in professional discussion and debate on current issues Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral forms

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,200.

ConnectEd Partnership is a unique partnership of over 100 schools, mainly based in Wolverhampton that have come together to share skills, experience and capacity to improve learning outcomes and achievements of our children and young people in their schools.(Please see ConnectEd Partnership’s website for a list of partnership schools).

ConnectEd is a school direct provider who works in close strategic partnership with the University of Wolverhampton and Birmingham City University to offer primary and secondary school led programmes.

Successful primary students will carry out their placements in partnership schools that have the capacity,expertise and proven track record in training students to become effective teachers.

ConnectEd’s secondary school direct programme is currently a partnership between Highfields Secondary School, Aldersley High School and the University of Wolverhampton.

Due to the extensive nature of our partnership, ConnectEd can offer a wide range and breadth of experience to ITT students. For example our Special schools will offer support and training to trainees wishing to specialise in working with children and young people with Special Education and Disabilities.

Gaining school experience can make a valuable contribution to your application process. Connected offer structured pre - placement experience work experience days to prospective applicants that will take place in one or more of our partnership schools. Completing a 5 day ‘Passport to Teaching Programme’ can guarantee you an interview on the School Direct Programme.

Interview process

The Assessment session will include the following:

  1. A General Knowledge (Curriculum Knowledge) Test
  2. This will assess the breadth of knowledge that the government and the university acknowledge is vital for primary teachers who teach across the curriculum.
  3. All questions relate either directly or indirectly to Primary Education and the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 &2.
  4. The test covers a wide range of areas of the curriculum including mathematics, English, science, geography, history, music, art, PE and RE.
  5. A group discussion This will assess understanding of some issues surrounding primary education and the challenges and rewards of working with children. This will also assess communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. A written task This will assess your understanding of an issue within primary education. This will also assess written English.
  7. One to one interview This will enable candidates to draw on personal experiences to demonstrate understanding of primary education, the role of the teacher and their attitudes towards children.
  8. Observation of teaching

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
