Course summary

You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning.

Much of the training will be delivered by expert teachers in the partnership schools. This will be enhanced by attendance at Bath Spa University. You will be assigned to one of the schools in the partnership in which you will do a teaching placement in the autumn and summer terms. Part of your spring term will be a teaching placement in a contrasting school.

You will have full access to Bath Spa University’s dynamic facilitators of both innovative and traditional approaches to teacher training.

You will be assigned a mentor from the staff of your placement school. From the beginning you will be treated like a member of staff and will attend staff meetings and development days. You will be in school from the first day of the school year so you will feel part of the team from day one.

Our mentors are outstanding teachers but they are required to undertake a rigorous training programme to develop their mentoring skills. This includes coaching, effective classroom observation and feedback skills. Therefore, although teacher training is demanding, you are assured of a high level of personal and professional support in a programme which is well managed at all levels.

Formal assessment for the School Direct programme takes place throughout the year. There is no final written examination.

Assessment takes the form of assessed practical teaching against the Teachers’ Standards and course work assignments set by your HEI link partner (PGCE)

Successful completion of the programme requires passes in practical teaching and in all assignments; the marking criteria for both scales are against a comprehensive range of criteria explicitly linked to the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

About the training provider

CETA is an inspirational place to work and learn. It provides a high quality school based learning opportunity for trainee teachers in partnership with the Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership (GITEP) University of Bristol and Bath Spa University. We have a strong track record of working with trainee teachers for many years and fully embrace the energy, enthusiasm and drive they offer to a school community. Within our alliance there are three secondary schools, with Marling School being the lead school, and thirteen primary schools working collaboratively to provide support, challenge and a diverse and exciting experience for our trainees.

Students across the partnership are well-motivated and are at the heart of everything we do. In CETA we believe that our staff are the most valuable resource and therefore they have access to on-going training and professional development. Our teachers are excellent practitioners and they are eager to share their skills, knowledge and practice with the next generation of teachers.

Interview process

You will have one interview to take place at one of our partner primary schools.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.

To do this, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Before you apply for this course, contact us to check Student visa sponsorship is available. If it is, and you get a place on this course, we’ll help you apply for your visa.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
