The course is a non-salaried PGCE (SCITT) QTS award and you will gain a PG Certificate in Education with 60 M-level CATS points.
Science is a core subject at secondary level and since there is a national shortage of Chemistry teachers, it is a subject that is much in demand. Science teachers will specialise at A-level, but often teach all three sciences to GCSE and our course is designed to give you the skills and the confidence to be a successful science teacher. It has been developed with our partner schools and features an ambitious curriculum.
You will develop your Chemistry skills by working in one of our placement schools from day one, where your dedicated subject mentor will support you to become a competent Chemistry teacher, able to inspire students to achieve in your subject. Working in partnership with the school subject and professional mentors, the SCITT director and support team and the subject specialist lead, will ensure that your course prepares you for the reality of teaching a practical subject. You will develop your classroom skills, as well as your knowledge and understanding of Chemistry alongside strategies to communicate this with your students.
As well as enriching your subject knowledge, you will learn:
- the professional behaviours and responsibilities of a teacher
- how pupils learn
- how to plan lessons
- how to manage behaviour
- how to adapt your teaching to meet the needs of all pupils
- how to assess learning
- how to ensure pupil wellbeing
We are a very close-knit and supportive team and we pride ourselves on the support we offer our trainees. You will work closely with a Subject Expert who is an experienced teacher and outstanding practitioner and will also be supported by a Subject Mentor and a Professional Mentor in your placement school. We also have a growing network of former trainees now employed in our placement schools, who offer an extra layer of support.
We achieved 100% employment with our most recent cohort, with the majority taking up positions in schools within our partnership.
Whatever your route into teaching, whether you are coming straight from university, from academia or industry, you will enjoy the support and guidance of experienced and passionate professionals as you begin your journey into science teaching.
