A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

North Manchester Initial Teacher Training Partnership is accredited by Bright Futures Education Trust. We are also affiliated with Manchester Communication Research School (part of the EEF’s Research School Network). We offer a comprehensive training programme, underpinned by the best available evidence which provides regular opportunities to rehearse and practise key skills, prior to teaching in the classroom.

We offer the English training route programme for the 11-16 age range and are extremely proud to work with partnership schools who share our vision and provide bespoke, subject specialist mentoring to our cohort of trainees.

Our curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to ensure progression of skills throughout the academic year, starting with a focus on behaviour which is refined throughout the programme. Over the course of the year, trainees learn how to confidently and efficiently plan well sequenced lessons, provide effective instruction, check for student understanding and adapt their teaching to meet the needs of their learners.

As a school centred training provider, we offer above the minimum requirement of 120 days of school experience, which provides our trainees with ample opportunity to experience life as a teacher within the classroom. Our package allows trainees to develop their teaching first hand within schools from Monday to Thursday, whilst each Friday is set aside for high quality centralised training at our training base in North Manchester.

We provide a second placement in a different school for all trainees, which is usually a six-week period after Christmas. This enables trainees to gain knowledge and experience of teaching within a contrasting setting. In addition to this, we provide our ITTs with the opportunity to gain experience of KS2, Post-16 and an SEND provision.

Trainees will also complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) delivered by the University of Manchester.

School placements

All of our trainee teachers are placed within one of our partnership schools and will be allocated an expert mentor from the onset. Mentors receive frequent training from North Manchester Initial Teacher Training Partnership to ensure consistency and tailored expertise within our partnership schools.

Trainees will remain in their host placement school for the duration of the academic year, however they will experience a contrasting placement from January to February, for a six-week block.
Trainees will spend over 130 days within schools, which is above the minimum requirement of 120 days.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in English or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

We are looking for dynamic, passionate and resilient candidates who are eager to enter the teaching profession and improve the life chances of young people by mitigating the impact of disadvantage.

As a school centred provider, we embrace the opportunity for trainees to predominately train within a school setting. A dedication for putting the needs and learning of children first is essential.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

North Manchester Initial Teacher Training Partnership was established in 2015 as part of Greater Manchester Academies Trust. Our purpose is to improve the education and life chances of young people by mitigating disadvantage for both the students and the communities we serve.

Within our partnership, we currently work with two secondary and six primary schools in Manchester, each of which offer high quality mentoring and support.

The Bright Futures SCITT is a partnership of primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and organisations from across the North-West, who share their knowledge, skills, expertise and experience to achieve a common goal of continuous educational improvement.

Interview process

We strive to select trainees who are passionate and eager to enter the teaching profession, particularly with a focus on learning within areas of disadvantage.

Our interview process enables us to meet candidates and to find out more about what they are able to offer the teaching profession.

Our interview process will consist of the following:

  • A short presentation defining what a candidate believes makes a great teacher
  • Delivering a short lesson
  • A formal interview
  • Time for questions and answers

If candidates are successful after interview, they are informed in writing and asked to accept their place at their earliest convenience.

At the end of August, as part of our induction training days, trainees will be asked to complete relevant English and Mathematics assessments so that the team at North Manchester Initial Teacher Training Partnership, are able to offer bespoke subject knowledge enhancement guidance, where appropriate.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
