A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

The i2i Teaching Partnership offers a one-year programme that will support you to achieve both your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and your Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Our supportive programme is delivered by expert practitioners, and is underpinned by the latest educational research. It will allow you to develop as a successful teacher by focusing on 7 key areas:

  • Teacher Expectations and Behaviour for Learning
  • Planning and Pedagogy
  • Subject Knowledge
  • Supporting all learners to succeed
  • Assessment of Learning
  • Professional Behaviours

Your skills as a teacher develop through your centre-based training and your school placement. Centre-based training involves spending one day per week on your Professional Studies with your fellow trainees, alongside specific Subject Studies days.

You will spend four days a week in your main placement school where you will be:

  • part of the school community from the very start
  • assigned a skilled and knowledgeable Subject Mentor to support and guide you
  • introduced to the practice of teaching in a structured way, building up your teaching experience and timetable at a pace that matches your individual progress.

In addition to your main placement you will have:

  • A six week second placement
  • experiences in Primary, KS5 and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) settings
  • experience of a Pupil Referral Unit

These will give you the opportunity to extend your practice and understand a wide variety of educational providers.

We have a multi-layered approach to ensuring that you are supported as an individual to develop into the best teacher you can be through your:

  • Link Tutor
  • Professional Mentor
  • Pastoral Tutor
  • Individual Care Plan (if appropriate)
  • Individual Support Plan

We use continuous assessment throughout the year to ensure that you are on track to be awarded your QTS. Mentors feedforward on your development in the classroom, with your own electronic Portfolio providing an overview of your progress.

The PCGE goes hand-in-hand with your training towards QTS. It is assessed through three written assessments spaced throughout the course.

By engaging with both educational theory and practice, we aim to develop your identities as creative and reflective practitioners, collaborative colleagues and professional teachers.

At the end of the year, you will have been supported through the application and interview process to secure your first teaching position.

School placements

The i2i partnership consists of 26 highly successful secondary schools around Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire, all committed to providing outstanding teacher training.

Placing trainees is a complex process and we take many factors into consideration when doing so. These factors include:

  • Establishing which schools in the partnership have the capacity to host a trainee in a particular subject (please note this may not be the most local school to you)
  • Selecting a Mentor who will be the best fit for the trainee
  • Establishing at interview where the candidate will be living for the course, if the candidate drives and if they have access to a car or if they will be dependent on public transport.

We do not expect trainees to travel for longer than 45 minutes each way to their placement school. Trainee journeys to their placement schools are typically between 20 - 40 minutes and we always do our best to accommodate trainees’ personal circumstances when placing them.

Trainees will spend the first term in their main placement school. After Christmas, trainees will be given a six-week contrasting second placement until the February half term, after which they will return to their main placement school.

All of our Initial Teacher Training courses teach the age range 11-16 so every trainee will get an exposure to teaching Key Stages 3 and 4.

In addition to your main placement you will have:

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

We ideally look for candidates with a degree subject that matches, or is closely related to PE. We will, however, consider applications from candidates without a related degree if they can demonstrate sufficient subject knowledge and expertise, either through work or through A’ Level subjects or further studies. We also look for the ability to teach a second subject.

Your degree subject should be in Physical Education or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

The i2i SCITT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all our staff and trainees to share this commitment.

Self-disclosure will be required as part of the recruitment process and all successful applicants will be required to undertake an Enhanced-level DBS check. If you have lived overseas for more than 3 months in the past 10 years, you will need to provide an overseas police check.

All Trainees will be required to complete a Fitness to Teach health questionnaire to ensure they are well enough for the rigours of the teaching profession.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

Interview process

Once we receive your application, successful applicants will be invited to attend an interview. The interview will be held at the ii2 training hub at Weydon School in Farnham and is of half a day’s duration.

The interview will consist of:

  • A short literacy test
  • A lesson observation
  • A 20 minute practical activity with a small group of children
  • An interview with the i2i SCITT Directors
  • Coffee and chat with a current Trainee

You will be asked to complete a subject knowledge competency assessment ahead of your interview.

You will be sent interview details in advance so you have plenty of time for preparation. We aim to make your interview as welcoming, enjoyable and informative as possible, enabling you to perform at your best and to gain the knowledge you need to accept a place if offered. Decisions about the offer are made very soon after the interview and the outcomes communicated through both the SCITT and DfE Apply.

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
