Your training will mainly be school-based, working with your school Mentor.
You will attend regular central training either at NWSCITT, one of our partnership schools or virtually.
You will attend specific subject training with your Subject Lead Tutor at one of our partnership schools.
You will have 2 main school placements.
You will be expected to teach 2 languages (normally French, Spanish or German.)
You will be supervised by your school-based Mentor. They will organise your timetable, observe lessons, set targets and provide you with feedback at regular progress meetings.
Each school has a Professional Tutor. They have responsibility for all trainees in school. They will support you and organise additional training on your placement where appropriate.
You will have a NWSCITT Languages Subject Lead Tutor. They will provide you with subject specific training, advice and guidance.
Additional support is available from the NWSCITT team.
At the start of the year, you will spend 3 days in school and 2 days in central/subject training. After October half-term, you will spend 4 days in school and 1 day in training. From February you will be in school 5 days per week.
You will cover subjects such as, but not limited to:
Starters and plenaries
Differentiation and adaptive teaching
Phonics and early reading
Teaching difficult issues
PSHE and SRE
Being an inclusive teacher
Languages Subject Training:
You will cover topics to improve your Languages subject knowledge.
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), recommended by NWSCITT.
You must evidence that you have met all of the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the course to be awarded QTS.
The Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s credits is accredited by Bath Spa University.
You will need to pass three PGCE assignments set by Bath Spa University.
You do not need to travel to Bath Spa University. Lectures will be at NWSCITT, a partnership school or virtually.
All Bath Spa resources are available on line.
You will have a Bath Spa ID card and access to their facilities if you wish.
NWSCITT will organise your placement school for you. We work with over 40 Primary and Secondary Partnership schools across Wiltshire, Swindon and surrounding areas, including schools within Ascend Learning Trust.
The school that you apply to on your application, is an Ascend Learning Trust school, and is for general location only. We cannot guarantee a placement at this school.
Placement schools will depend upon the capacity they have to support trainees and can vary each year.
We aim to place you in a school no more than 30-45 minutes commute, wherever possible.
You will have 2 placement schools during your training year.
Host Placement school: you will attend here between September - December and between Easter - June.
Complementary Placement school: you will attend here between January - Easter.
Your progress will be monitored throughout, with progress check points at the end of each placement.
We also aim to offer trainees:
Time in a Primary school to experience an alternative phase provision and provide an understanding of the transition between Primary and Secondary schools.
Time in a specialist provision school.
You will be in your Host School placement from the first day of the school year.
You will initially observe classes and work alongside the class teacher.
This will increase to team-teaching, lesson planning and lesson sequencing.
You will build up to teach approximately 40% of the timetable by Christmas.
By the end of the year, you will be following a 70%-80% teaching timetable.
By the end of the course you will develop high level teaching skills and be able to demonstrate that you can meet the Teachers’ Standards.
Expect to be in school from approximately 08.15am until 4.00/5.00pm each day.
You may have to attend after-school meetings or extra-curricular clubs.
Expect to work at home in the evenings and weekends to prepare school work and PGCE assignments.
Central/Subject specific training times: Usually 09.30am - 4.30pm, and occasional ‘twilight’ virtual sessions.

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
NWSCITT prefer your degree to be at least a 2:2 or higher in the first language you wish to speak (French, Spanish or German.)
The ability to speak a second language is essential, with an A-level in your second language at Grade C or higher desired,
Consideration will also be given to those who are native speakers, with the ability to speak a second language (French, Spanish or German.)
Your degree subject should be in modern languages or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.
Have exceptional knowledge of 2 languages (preferably French, Spanish or German.)
Be inspirational and committed to education.
Be flexible, resilient and adaptive.
Be a confident communicator.
Have good time management skills.
Be able to remain calm and focused under pressure.
Be prepared to work hard and be organised.
This will help you to understand the role of a Languages teacher and make an informed decision as to whether teaching is the right career choice for you.

Fees and financial support
The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.
Financial support from the training provider
Substantial tax-free bursaries of up to £30,000 are available in certain subjects. Your eligibility depends upon:
the subject you want to teach and your degree classification.
You must also be entitled to receive funding from the Student Loans Company (even if you are wishing to self-fund your tuition fee).

Each trainee will be challenged to become the best classroom practitioner they can possibly be.
Trainees should aim to become confident, competent and reflective practitioners who are capable of delivering consistently high quality lessons. In turn, they should want to produce the very best learning opportunities for all their students.
Guidance and support is available throughout the programme for all our trainees and we support individual needs where appropriate.
Interviews start in November and take place at North Wiltshire SCITT. We can interview virtually if required.
Interviews will consist of, but not limited to:
Planning for a small teaching task.
A subject knowledge interview, conducted in your chosen languages.
A formal interview with senior staff and subject leaders.
You may be asked to attend an additional meeting within a school environment. This may involve a further teaching activity.
You must present your original qualifications and identification at interview. Any outstanding qualification must be presented prior to starting the course.
