The Altius Alliance will ensure that you are trained, coached and mentored by experienced, highly effective practitioners and Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) to achieve QTS and a PGCE (SCITT)
All trainees undertake at least one of the 3 placements at Cheadle Hulme High School and a further placement at another school within our Alliance.
The Design and Technology Department at Cheadle Hulme High School comprises large workshop areas, dedicated to Food and Nutrition, Graphic Design and Engineering. All rooms have computer access with the latest Design programs installed. Teaching staff have specific specialisms; Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles and Engineering and are supported by two technicians. However, all staff work across subject areas to share expertise, knowledge and to encourage flexibility and innovation for both staff and students.
At KS3 students are taught a range of disciplines, knowledge and processes which include – the complete design process, drawing methods, model making, materials/ingredients knowledge, project planning, management and evaluation. We encourage a strong emphasis on STEM for all areas.
At GCSE we currently follow the AQA specification for Textiles, Resistant Materials and Graphic Design. We also follow NCFE for Graphic Design, WJEC for Food and Nutrition and BTEC for Engineering. We also offer AQA A Level Textile Design.
The course runs from September to the end of June.
All of the time is spent in schools (apart from 4 days at university to undertake the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) (SCITT).
The course comprises:
- Generic teacher training
- Design and Technology pedagogy programme - reflecting the KS3 and KS4 content outlined above
- SEND with mental health programme
- Three assessed teaching placements (11-16)
- Enhancement placements –SEND school, Post 16 and primary placement (unassessed)
- Enrichment opportunities
- PGCE (SCITT) with 60 Masters credits
QTS: This is an evidence based course where trainees are required to maintain and submit files of evidence of meeting the Teachers’ Standards (DfE). These files comprise school experience files, formal lesson observations, pedagogy tasks, specific generic and curriculum-based tasks.
PGCE (SCITT): Two assignments (5000 words each) at Masters level.
