A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

This postgraduate programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status and a full PGCE. The programme will prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching, learning from experienced outstanding teachers and immediately put your new skills into practice.

We are delighted to offer School Direct training courses by working in close partnership with the University of Warwick and we play a key role in recruiting and selecting trainees. By developing this partnership, we all strive to provide a high-quality training programme which leads to the award of the PGCE with QTS at Primary level.

Applicants apply direct to St Paul’s Caritas Christi (UCAS Provider Code 242) and undertake placements within the our school’s partnership. Our Partnership include a mixture of primary and secondary based in central Birmingham.

School Direct gives you the chance to combine a school-based year with the outstanding University programmes offered at the University of Warwick. You will work as part of the teaching team from day one and will learn from experienced colleagues in three schools, whilst also benefiting from the training, support and expertise of University of Warwick tutors.

Interview process

The team at St Paul’s Caritas Christi will be co-ordinating the recruitment process, following your application being checked by the Admissions department at the University of Warwick.

Applicants will be selected jointly by relevant staff from the University and the school. The interview usually takes up to half a day, including an introduction from the Headteacher, a tour of the school and a range of activities. The interview will take place at a number of schools, depending on available spaces.

Full details of the interview process, including any written tests, venues and times will be sent to applicants at least a week in advance of the interview date. Applicants will know, prior to interview, which school(s) they are being interviewed for.

The interview will normally include a short teaching activity, usually between 20 – 30 minutes, delivered to a small group of pupils. Applicants will always be informed about the topic for the teaching activity and the age group/ability of the students.

There are a set number of places available for each programme, so we recommend that you apply as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of obtaining a place. We will close courses once we have filled all of the available places. This will show on the UCAS website.

How school placements work

If you accept an offer you will be based in your placement schools for three extended placements throughout the whole school year. As a committed group of professionals, we invest in our School Direct trainees, and see the School Direct year as the start of your successful career with us. NQTs in our schools benefit from our high quality, year-long NQT Induction Programme. You will be assigned two mentors from the staff in your schools, one from your subject area (subject mentor) and also a senior member of staff (professional mentor).

You will have significant input during your University based training and will have a comprehensive induction to the course, followed by focus weeks at the university at the beginning of the Spring and Summer terms. You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment that will enable you to develop the professional knowledge, necessary skills and expertise for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning.

The school-based training will be delivered by our teachers who have a wide range of experience and expertise within the partnership schools. This will be enhanced by regular attendance at university. You will be assigned to schools in the partnership in which you will complete extended teaching placements. All schools have comprehensive intakes and you will gain valuable experience of working with young people of all abilities. You can express a preference for a placement at a specific school in the partnership but we cannot promise to meet your request. Our mentors are outstanding teachers who are required to undertake a rigorous training programme to develop their mentoring skills. This includes coaching, effective classroom observation and feedback skills.

From the beginning you will be treated as a full member of staff and will attend staff meetings and INSET opportunities, including full staff development days. You will be in school from the beginning of the school year so you will feel part of the team from day one.

Have graduated, or be about to graduate, from a UK Higher Educational Institute or equivalent, with a 2:2 or above honours degree. Preference is given to candidates with a 2:1 or above honours degree in a relevant subject.


Hold at least a Grade C or above in GCSE English Language, Mathematics and Science. Other qualifications may be approved as equivalent.

In order to comply with the Department for Education, all applicants must satisfy to the University their physical and mental suitability to undertake teacher training.

School Experience

Although it is not a requirement, we strongly recommend you have had some experience in schools focusing on mainstream Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classrooms, so that you are familiar with the atmosphere and demands across Primary.

About the training provider

St Paul’s School for Girls is an outstanding Catholic Secondary school which works in collaboration with a number of Catholic primary and secondary schools, forming the Caritas Christi group, having been involved in School Direct for 5 years. We have combined our experience in order to develop the role of schools who have extensive experience in school based initial teacher training. We have a cross-phase alliance of 13 schools, both secondary and primary located across the inner city region of Birmingham. The Caritas Christi group of schools have formalised a Catholic based regional network of schools, using their collective experiences to provide extensive support to staff and trainees.

Our close partnership of inner-city schools, Universities and other organisations is important to us because our schools are addressing similar needs and challenges: for example, very high levels of EAL, SEND, poverty and low baseline achievement in diverse communities which need our support. We are dedicated to reducing inequalities and giving children every opportunity to succeed at school and beyond. We are all committed to the best possible achievement for our children and staff and we set expectations high so that community aspirations can be raised. St Paul’s Caritas Christi works in partnership with the University of Birmingham, Newman University and the University of Warwick (Ofsted Outstanding for Initial Teacher Education) for all of our secondary subjects and the primary (general) programme, providing high quality courses and support for trainees.

About the accredited body

The Centre for Teacher Education (CTE) is the University of Warwick’s global service provider for high quality training and professional education. This new centre builds on the success of Warwick’s existing expertise in teacher training, which was graded as outstanding by OfSTED. We regularly provide all of our trainees, partners and other stakeholders with opportunities to tell us about their experiences, so that we can continually improve and become a world-class provider of professional education. The CTE aims to become a thought leader in teacher training in addition to developing a series of global opportunities for bespoke professional development.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Members of the ITT Support Team are highly experienced professional mentors from our schools. A member of this team will make visits to your school during the year. You will also have regular visits from your assigned university tutor. As a committed group of professionals, we invest in our School Direct trainees, and see the School Direct year as the start of your successful career with us. NQTs in our schools benefit from our high quality, year-long NQT Induction Programme. All trainees with receive tailored support to help with any specific needs and our friendly and welcoming staff will enable a smooth transition to the role of class teacher. Recent trainees have received support for medical needs throughout their training.
