Course summary

We offer a School Direct route into teacher training. This means part of your training will be school based and part of it will be University based.

All of our successful trainees will achieve a PGCE from the University of Leicester, 90 Masters Credits and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

The course is full time from the end of August until the following July. You will either be working in our schools or at the University of Leicester for academic study.

You will be assessed on written assignments and practical teaching in schools. You will have a University tutor and school based tutor for support, as well as lecturers, school based mentors and personal tutors.

Learn-AT School Direct is based at Church Langton CE Primary School who operates as the Lead School for the group of schools we work with. We organise your teaching placements for you and manage your time in school. Our experienced teachers will be delivering Maths and English training for you. We offer specialist workshops in subjects like RE, Music and Art.

We usually recruit around 10 trainees meaning we can really get to know our cohort each year. Many candidates are attracted to our course because of its personal and friendly nature.

Our candidates get to be part of our small, supportive group whilst having the benefits of being able to interact with their fellow PGCE trainees from other courses whilst at the University.

School placements

We are very luck to work with 20 schools who are dedicated to teacher training:

As part of our School Direct course you will be placed in 3 different schools of contrasting size, location and setting. We currently offer placements in KS1 (age 5-7) Lower KS2 (age 7-9) and Upper KS2 (age 9-11) but also have many fantastic Reception class teachers (children age 4-5) who are keen to work with our students.

We will liaise with you to offer you the best range of placements to suit your needs and experiences. As the Lead School, we organise all of your placements with you in mind.

All of our students get to spend the start of term with us at Church Langton, seeing how the beginning of the year unfolds for children and staff.

You will then have a short 2 week Preliminary placement linked to your first main placement in October, lasting 6 weeks.

Your second main placement is in the Spring term lasting 6 weeks followed by a final placement in the Summer term lasting 8 weeks. Each of the three main placements will be in different schools and in a different age group.

  • We try to avoid trainees having to travel further than this where possible, although it may be necessary for their developmental training needs.

About the training provider

We are based in the South East of Leicestershire near Market Harborough. We have good road links being close to the A6, A47 and A14.

We have delivered a Primary PGCE teacher training programme in partnership with the University of Leicester since 2014, initially as Church Langton School Direct and now as Learn-AT School Direct. We provide high quality teaching placements across our excellent group of local schools.

We can be flexible and allocate teaching placements according to your needs and experiences, matching you with the best schools for you. We have a range of highly skilled, experienced specialist teachers whom you can learn from. Training opportunities will be available to you across all the schools we work with.

We are very excited to be providing the Maths and English strands of your academic training. Our specialist teachers work closely with the University to provide masters level training whilst drawing on practical, classroom based experiences.

We are proud to be part of the Diocese of Leicester and many schools we work with are Church Schools. The Diocese take an active role in the RE training we provide.

At Learn-AT Teaching School we are privileged to work teachers who are specialists in their field. These specialists run workshops for our trainees in areas such as Art, Music and Design.

So if you want to teach in a range of engaging Primary Schools and have a say in where your training takes place then Learn-AT School Direct is the course for you!

Interview process

Our interview process is designed to provide candidates with different opportunities to display their passion for teaching.

Activities include includes preparing a task for a small group of children based on a picture book of your choice, a formal interview and online English & Maths assessments.

We are hopeful that you will be able to come into school for your interviews this year. You will be able to meet staff and children, have a tour of the school and see a school day in action. However we are fully equipped to conduct interviews virtual if needed.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
