About the course

This course aims to train you to become a capable, articulate teacher who can inspire children to combine designing and practical skills with in-depth knowledge and understanding. We believe that Design and Technology is an essential and exciting subject that allows pupils to be innovative and creative when taught by inspiring and motivational teachers like you. We’ll enable you to become the committed, confident and creative teacher you want to be with the skills you need share your passion for your subject. The course aims to explore and develop the links between designs, materials, science, nutrition, the needs of the user and the place of technology in the modern world. Through educational theory linked to creativity and its practice, we explore how products are designed to promote the needs of sustainable manufacturing processes and food provenance. The University workshops and seminars facilitate a space for learners to explore technical understanding, skills related to manufacture and the teaching of design capability. Our well-developed partnerships with schools and application of the Design and Technology Association’s principles in teaching methodologies support you in applying this gained knowledge in the pedagogy of teaching methodologies in schools. You will experience working in all materials irrelevant of your specialism through both a range of modules and the opportunity to get plenty of hands-on practice in local schools. This is supported by colleagues in the school partnership and experienced University tutors. School experience is varied and supports the development of your knowledge across the range of subjects taught in technology departments. This approach ensures that you are offered a well-rounded teacher education.

Interview process

You will be required to attend one interview. Interviews include: • exploration of curriculum knowledge • discussions about relevant experiences • a presentation or small teaching exercise • written task We also look for: • good communication skills • potential / suitability to be a good teacher • robustness to cope with the demands of the course

How school placements work

You will spend two-thirds of your time – at least 120 days – working in schools on block placements gaining valuable real-life experience in schools. The 120 days will be split over a minimum of two placements in design and technology departments. You will gain direct teaching experience and work with experienced practitioners in the classroom. School placements are predominantly in West Midlands secondary schools. You will be assigned a trained mentor and/or a tutor while on placement, who will support and guide your work, as well as provide training and feedback.

Financial support

You’ll get a bursary of £15,000 if you have a degree of 2:2 or above in any subject.

You don’t have to apply for a bursary - if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically start receiving it once you begin your course. Find out about eligibility and how you’ll be paid.

Qualifications

  1. An undergraduate Honours degree at 2:2 or above from a UK higher education institution, or a recognised equivalent, in a relevant subject.
  2. GCSEs at grade C/4 or above (or its equivalent) in English language and mathematics at the point of enrolment. Full entry requirements can be found on the page for each course on our website: www.bcu.ac.uk/education

Other requirements

You must meet the Department for Education’s Initial Teacher Training criteria, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and satisfying any other safeguarding checks required by this course. While not essential, you may wish to gain some school experience before attending interview. If you are a graduate and wish to train as a teacher but your degree did not provide enough subject specific content for you to gain automatic entry, you may be required to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course.

The Hereteach Alliance is a partnership of secondary schools, post 16 and Special schools in Herefordshire. With Wigmore Teaching School as the lead school, our accrediting Higher Education Institute is Worcester University.

Our School Direct Programme offers high quality provision where the trainees recruited will work both collaboratively and independently. Trainees will be supported in and engaged with their school from the beginning of September, developing relevant professional skills and learning from the wealth of experience that exists both within the schools and the University. Uniquely our trainees get experience in post 16 and special school establishments as part of their training.

Expectations are very high and the learning environment is fun, yet challenging and designed to create outstanding teachers. High quality support will be available at all times to help trainees on their journey towards becoming exceptional classroom practitioners.
