Qualified teacher status (QTS) allows you to teach in state schools in England and may also allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach in the EU and EEA, though this could change after 2020.

About the course
The course is taught in five week-long study blocks giving an immersive learning experience. Guest speakers from our partner schools facilitate some of the teaching sessions, as well as visits to our partner schools to see practice in action. A candidate who is offered a place on our programme will be expected to attend 5 pre-course induction days.

QTS assessment is via a portfolio of evidence, gathered across the year.
The interview process seeks to ascertain the strength of the applicant’s skill set and depth of understanding of the role and responsibilities of a teacher.
The interview would normally be conducted at Pen Green Nursery School or one of our Partnership Schools. However, due to the current situation, we are facilitating our interviews online and have adapted the interview day accordingly.
Applicants will be required to:
- Deliver a 2 - 5 minute presentation
- Participate in a discussion on school-based scenarios
- Carry out a teaching and learning activity
- Undertake a short written task reflecting on the teaching activity
- Undertake a Maths Task
- Undertake a Writing Task
- Participate in a formal interview
How school placements work
School Direct Salaried trainees are employed as an unqualified teacher in a school during their training year. In the Spring Term, all trainees are given the opportunity to experience a placement with an alternate age phase either in EYFS or Key Stage 1 at a different school.
Every trainee is linked with a school based tutor (SBT), a mentor and guide for the year. The SBT will be based in the trainee’s home school. The SBT works closely with the trainee in school on a daily basis; carrying out lesson observations, setting training targets and helping to organise in-school training opportunities which will enhance and develop the trainee’s practice.
Salaried trainee teachers are employed by their school full time as an unqualified teacher throughout their training year.
Course Cost Fee: £8,400
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
A Bachelors’ Degree with Honours, or equivalent qualification (2.1 or above preferred, but lower classes of degree may be accepted)
GCSEs or equivalent qualifications at grade 4/C or above in English Language, Maths and at least one Science.
If you have international qualifications these need to be verified as equivalent to UK qualifications by NARIC before applying for the programme.
We do not accept Key and Functional Skills qualifications at Level 2 as GCSE equivalent. We do accept GCSE equivalent qualifications from Equivalency Testing.

About the training provider
The Pen Green Teaching School works alongside an integrated Children’s Centre, an Early Years Provision, a Nursery School and a Research, Development and Training Base. Our Nursery School and Early Years provision have been consistently judged Outstanding by Ofsted; and in 2018 we were awarded ‘Overall School of the Year’ and ‘Early Years Provision of the Year’ by the Times Educational Supplement.
Our Initial Teacher Training programme provides the opportunity for candidates to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with a focus on the 3-7 year age group. We offer both Salaried and Tuition Fee funded routes.
Candidates applying for the Salaried and Tuition Fee training routes have the option to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate Education (PGCE), a Level 7 academic qualification, alongside their QTS. The PGCE is accredited by Birmingham City University (BCU).

Our Initial Teacher Training programme is accredited by the Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership. Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership is the longest-running, most well-established primary teacher training provider serving Milton Keynes and its surrounding areas, with 18 years’ experience in leading initial teacher training .
Training with disabilities and other needs
All efforts are made to support candidates with disabilities and other needs and we encourage candidates to discuss any programme adjustments they need.
Candidates need to identify their disability and other needs in their application. We request candidates who have existing Study Needs Assessments to include this with documents required at interview.
For candidates who do not have a Study Needs Assessment, we request a self-assessment checklist is completed prior to induction. If the score indicates the candidate may have additional needs, they will be given the opportunity to be assessed by a qualified specialist teacher who may make recommendations.
Following this, a Study Needs Agreement is put in place, outlining what the trainee & teaching team will do to support their study and meet their needs.
Candidates with a declared disability may be eligible for additional financial support through the student loans company. Eligibility may be assessed via a Disabled Students’ Allowance assessment centre.
