A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

A candidate who is offered a place on our programme will be expected to attend 5 pre-course induction days.

Trainees are immersed in the school environment right from the outset. Every trainee is carefully matched to a class in their ‘home school’ for their training year.

The core content is taught in five week-long study blocks giving an immersive learning experience. The study weeks take place at Pen Green Research, Development and Training Base. Guest speakers from our partner schools facilitate some of the teaching sessions, as well as visits to our partner schools to see practice in action.

QTS assessment is via course tasks, case study presentations and portfolios of evidence, gathered across the year.

Trainees working towards the PGCE undertake a series of three assignments, each worth 20 credits. The PGCE is accredited by Birmingham City University who provide two days of teaching and a tutorial day for each assignment.

School placements

Trainees are immersed in the school environment right from the outset. Every trainee is carefully matched to a class in their ‘home school’ for their training year. During the Spring Term, all trainees are to complete a 6-week placement at a different school to experience an alternative key stage either EYFS or Key Stage 1. On completion, the trainees return to their ‘home school’ for the remainder of the programme.

The school placements are arranged by Pen Green tutors and our partner schools across Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties. The tutors are thoughtful of the travel distance whilst placing a trainee to a ‘home school’ and will endeavour to arrange placements near a trainee’s home town. However, there will be instances where trainees will have to travel further afield to their school placements.

Every trainee is linked with a School-Based Tutor (SBT), a mentor for the year. The SBT will be based in the trainee’s home school. The SBT works closely with the trainee in school on a daily basis; carrying out lesson observations, setting training targets and helping to organise in-school training opportunities which will enhance and develop the trainee’s practice.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

We do not offer equivalency tests ourselves, but do accept from a number of providers. (Please note, if you are applying for an Apprenticeship route, equivalency tests are NOT accepted, you must study for functional skills tests instead. Apprenticeship routes are available through Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership.

A full career history accounting for any gaps in employment will be required if you are invited to interview and references will be followed up for safeguarding purposes.

Successful applicants must be willing to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

Our Initial Teacher Training programme is accredited by the Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership and provides the opportunity for candidates to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a focus on the 3-7 year age group.

Candidates have the option to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate Education (PGCE), a Level 7 academic qualification, alongside their QTS. The PGCE is accredited by Birmingham City University (BCU).

Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership is the longest-running, most well-established primary teacher training provider serving Milton Keynes and its surrounding counties, with 19 years’ experience in leading initial teacher training.

Please note, this is a School Direct Tuition Fee programme, if you have the requisite experience and come with the financial backing of a school, then you can consider the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship programme, which is available through Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership.

Interview process

The interview process is to seek the strength of the applicant’s skill set and depth of understanding of the role and responsibilities of a teacher.

Applicants are required to:

  • Deliver a 2 - 5 minute presentation
  • Participate in a discussion on school-based scenarios
  • Carry out a teaching and learning activity
  • Undertake a short written task reflecting on the teaching activity
  • Undertake a Maths Task
  • Undertake a Writing Task
  • Participate in a formal interview

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

Training with disabilities and other needs

All efforts are made to support candidates with disabilities and other needs and we encourage candidates to discuss any programme adjustments they need.

Candidates need to identify their disability and other needs in their application. We request candidates who have existing Study Needs Assessments to include this with documents required at interview.

For candidates who do not have a Study Needs Assessment, we request a self-assessment checklist is completed prior to induction. If the score indicates the candidate may have additional needs, they will be given the opportunity to be assessed by a qualified specialist teacher who may make recommendations. Following this, a Study Needs Agreement is put in place, outlining what the trainee & teaching team will do to support their study.

Candidates with a declared disability may be eligible for additional financial support through the student loans company. Eligibility may be assessed via a Disabled Students’ Allowance assessment centre.
