PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
The School Direct (salaried) route is for trainees who wish to take ownership of their own classes from the start of the course. If a school feels you have the necessary knowledge and skills to teach, they can employ you as a salaried trainee for four days a week and training on one day.
The training sessions will be led by expert practitioners, some of whom work in our excellent partner schools to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of teaching lessons effectively in a secondary school across all key stages, where applicable.
At school you will have an experienced appointed mentor who will work in the school and provide support for planning and delivering your own lessons. You will receive regular feedback to further develop your teaching and learning strategies and be fully supported by your school, department and by the SAF ITT team.
As part of the programme trainees will complete a contrasting school placement and attend focus days to enhance your expertise and understanding of SEND and other specialist areas of education.
A programme of continuous formative assessment of trainees’ subject knowledge and ability to teach, as recorded within the portfolio, culminates in a rigorous assessment of the Teachers’ Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as specified by the Department for Education (DfE). As an accredited provider, SAF ITT recommends trainees, on successful completion of their training programme for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Trainees will also be able to study for a PGCE alongside the QTS, this will be dependent on the qualification criteria being met.
Candidates who meet the entry requirements will be invited to interview.
The interview will take place at one of our partnership schools and involve staff from both SAF ITT and the partner school.
Please note that the venue of your interview has no bearing on the school you will be placed in should you be successful.

How school placements work
Trainees will have two school placements in addition to other placement visits during the programme and will be supported by mentors and the SAF ITT team. Trainees will spend time in a special school and a mainstream school.
Trainees will be allocated a school taking into account where they live and their individual needs. The school will be either 11-16 age range or 11 to 18.
Initially trainees will spend three days in the school placement and two days in training sessions/workshops. This increases to four days in a school placement and one day training each week.
The trainee will be paid on the unqualified teacher’s pay scale.
You will not be required to pay any course fees.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
Candidates are required to have:
- GCSE or equivalent qualification, at Grade C/level 4 or above in English and mathematics
- A lower second class degree in the subject they wish to train to teach in or a degree in a related subject. We would also consider a third class degree for candidates who demonstrate a real aptitude for teaching.
Overseas qualifications should be verified by NARIC
SAF ITT, as the accredited provider, and its partners are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about working with students. The programme is challenging, and so we are looking for candidates with a wide range of skills, knowledge, experiences and an aptitude for teaching.

About the training provider
Maplefields Academy is the Lead School for the School Direct Training Programme offering both Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and mainstream courses, working in collaboration with a number of other special schools. The academy is a Special School and a Specialist College for pupils with severe Behaviour Emotional and Social Difficulties. As such, we offer a full range of opportunities for children and young people with special needs aged from 2 - 18 years. Our academy offers a wide range of excellent facilities including a vocational centre and full size sports hall, astro turf areas and a climbing wall.
We are an academy committed to life-long learning and we believe that education for our students includes not only the subject of the National Curriculum but most importantly communication and life skills. We aim, therefore, to teach the students the skills necessary for independence and living that others may take for granted. We want our students to become inclusive educational opportunities for students from our academy and mainstream schools to share, ensuring that there is a close partnership between ourselves and the wider educational community. We provide a behaviour outreach service to schools in the north of the county.
We are a very happy academy where children enjoy their learning experiences. We concentrate on providing for individual needs so that all students can be encourages to reach their full potential. This means supporting them to achieve accreditation appropriate to their level of understanding and abilities.
