Course summary

We believe that teaching is an exciting, challenging and rewarding profession. We pride ourselves on having a proven track record over the past 20 years in training excellent practitioners and supporting them in gaining positions within our partnership schools. Forest Independent Primary Collegiate, the accredited provider, has written this highly comprehensive and bespoke programme. It reflects the exceptional standards in Harlow schools and our understanding of what makes an excellent teacher. We are committed to offering high quality training for local candidates with the aim of securing the beginning of a successful career in teaching. We also aim to support trainees’ careers after completing the programme through excellent CPD opportunities on offer within our school partnership. This includes subject knowledge and leadership training, and opportunities to take part in research and to work collaboratively with colleagues in other schools. We scrutinize the applications and place trainees in the partnership schools. These are excellent mainstream schools that are committed to supporting the process of the training.

School placements

This one-year primary course is based in one school for the majority of the year with a contrast setting placement. Candidates learn the art of teaching in the classroom for four days each week, guided by their mentors. Each trainee is allocated a professional tutor who visits and supports the trainee on a regular basis. Host schools are able to offer insights into their successful practices and induct trainees in line with the best of teaching through current research. Centre-based training is every Friday. The programme requires a full time commitment of 5 days per week from September to July and trainees are expected to participate fully in the everyday life of the schools in which they train.

About the training provider

Harlow Teacher Training Partnership (HTTP) is led by St. Alban’s Catholic Academy, the Lead School for Teacher Training in Harlow. HTTP’s role is to be an initial point of contact for potential trainees; work with Essex Teacher Training on admissions; co-ordinate the placement of trainees in the Harlow Partnership Schools and monitor the training courses and placements. But we offer more than just this …

  • A voluntary experience placement scheme is run by St. Alban’s Catholic Academy for potential trainees (short-term). This may help candidates to decide on a particular Key Stage of interest, gain more knowledge of a typical teacher’s working day, gain some subject/curriculum knowledge, gain more experience in working in the classroom generally.
  • St Alban’s remain a point of contact for you during the training year, offering further support where needed
  • We have many partner schools in Harlow and surrounding areas and with such a range of placements available, we endeavour to find the school to suit each individual.

Interview process

The selection process consists of an interview in one of our partnership schools, which will be carried out by a member of staff from FIPC and/or a member of staff from the partnership school. Applicants will be invited to visit a suitable school for observation with children.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)

Training with disabilities and other needs

We are committed to offering all prospective trainees the opportunity to gain QTS. Please let us know if you have a specific need and/or require any adjustments at the interview stage or throughout the ITT programme.
