A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

As a Computer Science Initial Trainee Teacher (ITT) you will learn how to plan and teach effective computing lessons. Working alongside experienced Computing/ICT Teachers you will be develop a clear understanding of how the subject is delivered in secondary schools.

A significant amount of your learning and training will take place during two block placements within our Alliance schools. You will also attend subject knowledge days at the University of Huddersfield. You will complete a minimum of 120 days in school. On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the PGCE (with QTS). This comprises of 120 credits, 90 of which are at Masters Level.

At the GLA, we try to contrast the two placement schools as much as possible, providing the trainee with a breadth of experience which will make them employable in the future.

You will be placed in your subject Department and will receive practical training which will allow you to develop a clear understanding of educational issues and effective classroom techniques. You will be gradually introduced to teaching through observations, training, assessments and marked assignments. Throughout the course you will be supported by teachers, senior leaders and trained mentors. You will be provided with the opportunity to immerse yourself fully in school life.

We believe that a GLA school direct trainee is provided with a realistic teacher training experience and we have no doubt you will build a network of contacts within the teaching profession. Many of our former trainees have secured employment within our Alliance schools and continue to train with the GLA in their NQT year and beyond.

We are confident our GLA trainees are very well supported during their training year. School leaders have a firm commitment to ensuring that all of our trainees complete their studies with the essential skills and knowledge to prepare them for a rewarding career in the teaching profession.

Interview process

Applications are received on our behalf by the University of Huddersfield via UCAS. We work closely together to ensure all applicants meet the academic requirements of the course. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to one interview at one of the GLA schools. You will be provided with details of the interview once selected. Under normal circumstances, the interviews comprise of:

  • Mini Teach (15 minutes) with a class of students (Key stage 3)

  • Formal Interview with Teachers & Representatives from the UoH

  • Meeting with Head of Department to explore Subject Knowledge or alternatively a written test.

  • PLEASE NOTE Due to current COVID restrictions interviews may need to be virtual via Microsoft Teams.

How school placements work

You will have two block placements during the PGCE year. Training is delivered in our GLA schools by senior leaders, teachers and lecturers from the University of Huddersfield. There are 6 secondary schools within our Alliance located in the Kirklees area.

Wherever possible we try and consider trainees preferences over schools, but this is not always feasible. We do consider travelling distances, but trainees must demonstrate some flexibility over school placements. For secondary training you will cover the age range 11 - 16 and you may be offered the opportunity to gain experience in post 16 education wherever possible.

At each placement school you will have a Subject Mentor and a Professional Mentor (usually outside of your subject area) All mentors are experienced members of staff and receive regular specialised training from the University of Huddersfield and GLA. Trainees have regular opportunities to network with other trainees both in placement schools and across the Alliance through training and CPD.

Fees

The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,250

This information is for applicants applying to study at the University of Huddersfield in the academic year 2019/20. Please note that your tuition fees for subsequent years may rise in line with inflation (RPI-X).

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £26,000
  • a bursary of £24,000

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Computing or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

Qualifications

Entry requirements are normally:

  • An Honours degree (2:2 or above), at least 50% of your degree should be in Computing Science;

  • GCSE English Language & Mathematics grade 4 or above (grade C or above under the previous GCSE scheme) or a pass at grade 4 or above with equivalencytesting.com

  • Requirements to be met by 31 August 2021

  • Students starting their course in September 2021 no longer need to pass the professional teacher skills tests. Instead GLA are required to make an assessment of English and Maths knowledge and where necessary provide support to strengthen these skills throughout the training year

Personal qualities

You must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, and that you have the intellectual and academic capabilities to meet the required Teachers’ Standards by the end of the programme.

Other requirements

  • A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and health check. There is a charge (currently £44). You don’t need to do anything before you apply.
  • You should provide two references. If you are about to graduate or have graduated within the past three years, one referee should be a university or college lecturer who can comment on your academic ability.

The Green Light Alliance (GLA) is a growing partnership of schools and institutions in West Yorkshire. Lead School is Shelley College (Secondary) and was designated a Teaching School in 2014. Our passion is to ensure the children and young people in all our schools achieve their personal best.
