About the course
The Pimlico-London SCITT offers an academically rigorous and school-led ITT programme. Our SCITT programme was awarded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and ranked as the third best provider in the country (top in London) in The Good Teacher Training Guide 2017. We believe in the primacy of knowledge and that teacher-led, school based education can transform lives. Our trainee teachers learn to see themselves as the leaders of their pupils, as custodians of the best that has been thought, known, and created, and as a catalyst for innovation and transformation through the valuable knowledge and skills they will impart to those they teach.
We believe that as a student teacher you should be immersed in your host schools for the majority of the time so that you can benefit from the support and guidance of subject experts. Here you will benefit from a mentor who will observe your weekly progress against the Teachers’ Standards. You will also receive half a day of training in term time for training.
Due to Covid-19, schools are closed and so interviews will be conducted by telephone conferencing. This will usually be with two members of the SCITT team, and you will be sent a link to this meeting on the day.
You will be asked to complete a series of tasks before the interview and send to us by email before the interview. This includes a short essay on what makes great teaching and a lesson plan document you will be asked to complete based on a set learning objective.
We will provide more details about the interview when we confirm this with you.
What will happen on the day of the interview?
The video Interview
The interview will last around 25-30 minutes.
We will ask you a series of questions about why you have chosen teaching as a career, and why you have chosen our route and us as a provider. There will also be the opportunity to ask us any questions you may have.
After the interview we will ask you to complete a subject-knowledge task. This will be a past paper GCSE-level question, for which no preparation is required.
How school placements work
Pimlico London SCITT is part of Future Academies, a family of schools which has built a reputation for achieving the highest standards for all its pupils. We believe the most effective way to experience all aspects of school life is to be based in a host school throughout the year. To supplement this, trainee teachers will also participate in three focused placements. Trainee teachers do a three week placement in the second term, which will offer them a contrasting experience within our network of excellent schools. This network includes many independent, grammar and specialist schools. Furthermore, trainee teachers will also benefit from a week’s placement in a primary (for secondary trainees), or a secondary (for primary trainees). They will also gain experience within the Tri Borough Alternative Provision.
The salary will be decided by your placement school. It will be a salary on the unqualified teachers’ pay scale.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
This course is suitable for Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants and unqualified teachers who have not taught for more than 2 years. Applicants should obtain the support of their school, as they will need to employ you as an apprentice. This school should also be one of your referees. Please email the address below, or visit our website, if you need further assistance.
UK degree, at least 2:1 or above (or international equivalent)
At least grade C in GCSE English, Maths and Science
This course is suitable for school support staff and unqualified teachers without much experience, who are looking to obtain the PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status.
In addition to the required qualifications above, before the start of the course, you will need to:
- Have undergone an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check
- Have undergone an occupational health assessment to assess fitness for teaching.
About the training provider
Future Training was founded by Future Academies in 2013 to recruit and train the highest calibre of new teachers. We are based at our Teaching School, The Future Institute of Education, in the heart of London and offer an academically rigorous and school-led ITT programme. We are judged ‘Outstanding’ in every area by Ofsted, and ranked third in the country (best in London) in the Good Teacher Training Guide 2017. We have been praised for our expert mentoring, wide variety of placements and network of expert speakers.
We are extremely proud of our excellent outcomes and almost perfect employment rates. Our alumni have experienced rapid career progression including many Heads of Departments, Heads of Years and Curriculum developers.
Training with disabilities and other needs
The needs of the candidates will be taken into account at interview. Trainee teachers benefit from a mentor who leads their support throughout their training. The central SCITT team meets with trainee teachers weekly through our Professional Studies programme. This allows us to regularly update our risk assessment of the trainee teacher and adapt the course accordingly.
