About the course

PGCE Secondary School Direct Business (11-16 or 11-18) provides you with the practical training and theoretical knowledge required to become an outstanding Business Studies teacher.

It will prepare you to teach the National Curriculum and related national strategies at GCSE and A level. Completion of this ten-month course leads to both a postgraduate qualification and qualified teacher status (QTS), as well as up to 60 master’s-level credits towards further study.

You will observe and teach classes under the guidance of an experienced business education teacher mentor, improving your skills in planning, teaching and assessment.

Collaborative learning and formative teaching will allow you to develop the knowledge and capabilities of students in your own classrooms in all aspects of business education, including business studies, economics, and accounting and key vocational business qualifications.

You will be taught by a teaching team with a nationally recognised reputation for research, teaching and publications in business education.

The majority of the course focuses upon practical training in teaching and learning-related skills. You will enjoy extended periods of school experience, which will provide opportunities to work in a Primary setting and to teach in at least two different Secondary schools. In total, 25 weeks of your PGCE will be spent experiencing and working in different types of school.

This practical training is underpinned by the development of your knowledge and understanding of educational theories, ideas and concepts, including current issues and developments.

At the end of the course, your lead school may offer you a permanent role.

School placements

Your School Direct Programme will consist of a combination of classroom practice and relevant training. You will be given the opportunity to spend much of your time developing and practising your teaching skills with high quality school placements from across our partner schools.

You will also be offered a programme of training and development delivered by your placement school and university provider. You will be supported along the way by a number of different colleagues at Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College and will be assigned a school-based Subject Mentor, a Professional Mentor and a University-based Tutor.

The 2 main placements work on an A/B/A rotation where Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College, as the lead school, is usually the A placement although this may not always be the case.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Minimum 2:2 honours degree in business, management, economics, or a related subject, with at least half of the content directly related to business education. A strong academic record at A-level (or equivalent).

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

About the accredited body

The Good Teacher Training Guide 2017 rated The University of Manchester as top in the North West for secondary initial teacher training.

Their 2018 Ofsted inspection recognised them as Outstanding across all assessed elements in all their PGCE Programmes which shows the high quality of work done across the Partnership in the training of teachers.

Trainees are taught by experts in education who are active in education-related research.

Secondary subjects are taught by specialist tutors with substantial teaching experience. The tutors are in touch with current educational practice and often contribute to research, policy and curriculum developments.

Interview process

BTHCC is the Lead School in the partnership and will be coordinating the recruitment process.

You are welcome to visit the school prior to application - please ring school to arrange this on 0161 911 8090.

Interviews will usually take place at BTHCC. When you come for a School Direct interview there are likely to be other applicants being interviewed alongside you. We are keen to see that you can work collaboratively with others. The criteria we will use at interview to decide whether or not we offer you a place on the course are:

  • an awareness of current educational issues
  • a realistic and positive view of schools and schooling
  • an open and enquiring mind
  • clear reasons for wanting to teach
  • motivation and commitment to teaching pupils of all levels of ability
  • maturity and self-confidence
  • an appropriate level of subject knowledge in your chosen subject for secondary applicants

You will be expected to plan and deliver a 20 minute teaching session - a topic will be supplied in advance of the interview and you will be given information regarding the age and ability of the pupils.

International students

We can sponsor Student visas, but this is not guaranteed.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
