It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Course summary

The Bedgrove Infant Lead School SCITT primary course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). You will train across the 3-7 age range in our partnership schools, where you will learn from experienced practitioners, particularly your personal mentor. Four days per week are spent on placement in our partnership schools. One day per week, you will join the rest of your cohort for training usually at Bedgrove Infant School, but also alongside primary trainees within the Tommy Flowers SCITT.

Our curriculum is broken into six areas:

  • Pedagogy and how children learn
  • Behaviour management and setting high expectations
  • Adaptive teaching
  • Assessment of pupils
  • Professional behaviour, statutory responsibilities and wellbeing
  • Subject knowledge and curriculum

The curriculum is sequenced to progress your knowledge and understanding of teaching and is integrated through both your core training and school-based placements to provide consistency of approach. You will receive regular formative feedback in the way of observations, weekly mentor meetings, visits from Bedgrove Infant Lead School staff along with informal conversations with colleagues at your school. By demonstrating that you have made satisfactory progress in the six curriculum areas, the Tommy Flowers SCITT will be able to award you QTS at the end of the course. 100% of our graduates have secured teaching positions upon completing the course. This course is framed by a commitment to help you to develop into a graduate teacher who is reflective, creative, resourceful, independent, collaborative and resilient, along with an excellent knowledge of the Early Years. It presumes you have the drive, organisation and commitment to undertake a course which is devised to develop your expertise in teaching and learning. You can expect a wide range of support throughout the year. Your school mentor will be responsible for you on a daily basis and the mentors are supported in school by a nominated Professional Tutor. Bedgrove Infant Lead school staff will provide pastoral, academic and professional support. The PGCE is an academic qualification assessed through a group presentation and two written assignments exploring the topics of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), behaviour management and assessment, marking and feedback. These projects are spaced throughout the course with regular training sessions to develop your written and research skills, collaborate with others and build your understanding of these key areas of teaching.

School placements

Our trainees teach across the 3-7 age range and will have two contrasting school placements during the course: a main placement and a second placement. They will work in these placement schools four days a week (Monday-Thursday), giving them approximately 140 days in school.

Main placement: This is the school in which the trainee will spend two terms in an Early Years (nursery or reception) class. By remaining with this class for a large proportion of the year, trainees develop a secure understanding of pupils’ progress over time, how this is tracked and used to inform teaching.

Second placement: This takes place in the spring term and provides trainees with the opportunity to teach in a KS1 (year one or two) class and to experience a contrasting setting.

Additional Visits: These visits are built into the core training programme so that trainees are given regular opportunity to spend time in different schools and settings, enabling them to focus on specific areas such as behaviour management and transition from pre-school to school as well as KS1 to KS2.

We work with partner schools across Aylesbury and the surrounding area who share the same values, curriculum approach, high standards and commitment to partnership as us. Working in a close geographical area, our trainee teachers typically travel only a few miles from home to school. From day one, you will be regarded as a teacher. However, your teaching timetable will develop and grow to suit your own experience, pace and progress. Initially, you will observe teachers across your school so that you become familiar with the children and approach to teaching in your school. Gradually, you will build up your teaching so that you are lead teaching up to 4-8 lessons or learning episodes a week before October half term. The proportion of lead teaching would then increase gradually each week until your timetable reaches approximately 16 hours per week.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

We accept equivalency tests from A* teaching or equivalencytesting.com. We do not accept pending equivalency tests so applicants need to have passed these prior to applying for the course.

Personal qualities

Applicants for our courses come from a diverse range of backgrounds and have a variety of prior experiences. Many applicants are recent or soon-to-be graduates from university, whilst others have been working in schools already, perhaps as teaching assistants or volunteers. Some applicants, are looking for a career change, realising that teaching is rewarding and that they can make a significant difference to the lives of children. Applicants should be organised, reflective and professional, able to work with others and have strong subject knowledge and interest in early years education

Other requirements

A DBS check will be carried out after interview. It is ideal, but not always possible for you to have some experience in an Early Years or KS1 class. This could be voluntary work and it is good practice for this to be in place before you apply for a place on the course. ENIC (formerly NARIC) certification of equivalency will be required if qualifications have been undertaken abroad.

Salary

Salaried positions are only available to those applicants who have secured the support of an employing school prior to submitting an application.

Since the removal of the government’s salary grants for primary courses, employing schools will also need to cover the cost of the course (£9,250). Schools may decide that the course fee itself should be covered by the trainee so this is something you should discuss with a prospective employer prior to accepting an offer and expectations regarding the fees should be made explicit within the offer letter.

Salaried trainees will be paid on at least point 1 of the unqualified teachers’ pay scale for the duration of their training.

We have a renowned reputation for our Early Years provision, making the best use of both the indoor and outdoor environments to stimulate children’s learning. We understand that teaching in the Early Years requires specific training focusing on the benefits of learning through play, the role of the adult and child development. Our aim is to support trainees in becoming the best Early Years teachers they can be whilst enabling them to understand teaching and learning from 3 through to 7 years of age.

Interview process

If called to one of our selection days, you will be sent full information via email. The selection days are an opportunity for us to get to know you but also for you to find out more about us and the course. The selection day includes the following:

  • Further information from us to you about the course and an opportunity to look around Bedgrove Infant School where the interview will take place
  • 20-minute task with a group of 8-10 Early Years children
  • 5-minute presentation (the topic will be shared in advance)
  • An unseen written task
  • An interview

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
