About the course

Primary Advantage Federation is seeking to appoint excellent applicants like you to train through the School Direct Programme for the academic year 2020-21

This Salaried route is provided with the Institute of Education (IOE), UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is a global leader in teacher education. Their programmes are recognised by Ofsted as “outstanding” in every criterion across Primary and Secondary Education. All UCL School Direct students have full access to UCL student support services and facilities.

The salaried route is a highly popular course known to develop effective, confident teachers who play a key role within the school from the first day. You will be welcomed as a member of our staff in our schools.

You will be completely immersed in your school with an expectation that you will participate in all aspects of day to day life- working the full school year. You will be coached to teach whole classes from early on in your placement, with the guidance, nurture and support of your class teacher.

There are 15 days of university led input throughout the year from the Institute of Education. In addition to this Primary Advantage offer weekly hub sessions which provide the bridge between the theory and your classroom practice.

You will benefit from working across Early Years Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 during the course of the year. You will be based and employed in your ‘home’ school from the start of the year. During the second half of the Spring term, however, you will spend 4-6 weeks in one of our other primary schools in Hackney, teaching in a consecutive age phase. In summer you will then return to your base class and school and resume a 70% teaching timetable.

You will benefit from a very strong support network which includes an IOE tutor, school mentors, class teacher mentors and the student peer group. Most importantly you will love working with our children.

As part of our support programme you’ll come together for a weekly Hub training session with some of the best teachers in our Federation for training, observations, and reflecting on practice. We have found this creates a really strong peer group which students find incredibly supportive and valuable. It also adds an important third dimension to your teacher training experience.

Interview process

On receiving your application at Primary Advantage we will review and invite suitable candidates to an interview in one of our schools. Full details of the interview process will be given at the time but you can expect to spend half a day in one of our schools, observing and participating in some classes, meeting some of our staff and pupils, and participating in some group and individual tasks with other interview candidates. We usually ask you to prepare a short activity to teach to one of our classes, you will have an interview with one of our Head Teachers, and you may be asked to complete English and maths tests, in line with guidance from our partner the IOE.

We hope this thorough interview experience will give you a good insight into our schools to help you make your decision, as well as giving us a good rounded opportunity to see your skills and abilities in different situations.

If successful at this interview we will recommend you to the IOE for a place on the programme. They will check your eligibility and suitability and they will make the final decision and offer.

How school placements work

At the interview stage we try to match you with the school that best suits your needs and interests, and also try to place you in the key stage of your choice, if you have a preference, though we cannot guarantee these preferences.

You will be placed at the start of the year in one of our schools which will be your main setting and you will rotate on placement to one of our other schools to experience different settings and key stages at certain points later in the year.

Throughout the year you will have plenty of opportunities to experience working with pupils at all key stages and learn from outstanding practitioners in different settings.

You will be paid the unqualified teacher pay rate for inner London.

The course fees for the UCL academic programme are paid by your employing school.
