About the course

Candidates will be trained in schools which have finely developed systems in place to nurture development of the whole teacher and equip that trainee teacher with the skills required to meet the professional standards.

Each successful candidate is placed in a school for the majority of the placement and the training will be provided by expert practitioners. A dedicated Professional Studies programme takes place each week in the placement school. In the spring term, there is a six-week second placement in a contrasting school setting usually one of the partnership schools.

School placements

Trainees spend the majority of their year in a single school, but also complete a six-week placement in a contrasting school in January and February. All schools that form part of the Plume Community Teaching Partnership are judged at least as ‘Good’ and are within a twenty minute drive of the Lead School, Plume Academy.

The Partnership offers ample opportunity for trainees to gain experience of 11-16 and 11-18 teaching.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Plume Community Teaching Partnership Institute can arrange equivalency tests for suitable applicants who are able to demonstrate a strong commitment and potential to teach. Applicants should contact the partnership in advance of applying, for further information.

Personal qualities

We are looking for innovative trainee teachers with a passion for working with children and a passion for their subject who will create in our pupils an appetite for learning, regardless of their ability. This will usually be demonstrated by previous work experience in schools but might also encompass other settings where working with children from 11-18 has been a consistent aspect of the potential trainee’s life.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

£8625 QTS £9250 QTS + PGCE

About the training provider

The Plume Community Teaching Partnership consists of a consortium of schools in South Essex, all within a twenty minute drive of the Lead School, Plume Academy in Maldon.

Working together, we are committed to providing excellent teacher training in primary and secondary placements, developing outstanding teacher practice and supporting aspirant future leaders. Candidates must have a desire to work with young people, a passion for their subject and a commitment to raising pupil achievement. As part of our successful ITT programme, candidates will receive excellent training from experienced staff working in association with TES Institute.

The unique blended learning programme combines school based training and online learning materials facilitated by a network of experienced subject specialists. The training experience is also further enhanced through the organization of a number of visits to other educational establishments, such as special schools, primary schools and schools in an urban environment.

We celebrate the quality of teaching and learning which takes place across the partnership. This provides excellent role models from within the teaching staff and opportunities to observe outstanding teaching. The pupils in these schools are a credit to each individual school and enjoy good relationships with their teachers to create a positive environment for learning. Each school aspires to engender an ‘appetite for learning’ within its pupil community, both in the classroom and within the range of extra-curricular activities it provides.

Interview process

Due to current COVID-19 circumstances we have had to make some changes to our interview process with the main difference being a virtual interview rather than face-to-face. Additionally there will be no lesson observation. We would ask for you to deliver a short, five minute presentation for which you can provide a Powerpoint or other supportive resources if you would like to. This would then be followed by some questions that explore your desire and motivation for entering the teaching profession.

We may in the course of the year take the decision to return to face to face interviews and if we do candidates will be informed of the interview process when they have been shortlisted.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

TES Institute and Plume Community Teaching Partnership are committed to promoting access for people with disabilities and additional needs. We support and enable students with physical disabilities, sensory impairments, specific learning difficulties, special psychological needs and medical conditions that can have an impact on day-to-day activities, to participate in TES Institute programmes, as far as is reasonably practicable and within any constraints laid down by relevant professional bodies. TES Institute will:

  • Encourage applications from people with disabilities
  • Seek to provide information in suitable formats
  • Assess applicants who disclose disabilities or specific needs solely on the basis of their academic potential and suitability to train to teach
  • Invite applicants with a disability or specific need to contact TES Institute to discuss how their requirements can be accommodated
  • Provide additional support or resources at application to enable the applicant to complete the application process including attending interview where applicable
  • Offer additional provision to ensure no disadvantage compared with other applicants
  • Work towards the earliest possible assessment of needs and offer of reasonable accommodations where required
  • Make reasonable accommodations in assessment where applicable and without impacting the learning outcomes to be assessed
  • Provide educational support services as appropriate for eligible students
  • Take steps to encourage students with progressive conditions, or who become disabled during their programme of study, to continue their studies
  • Promote an inclusive environment and attitude at TES Institute and endeavour to provide appropriate training to staff where required
